help on Map scaling

  Hello,
  i have problem with map scale here, what does it mean when stated there on the map 'approx scale 1:7500 or 1:15000'
  does it mean 1cm on the map = 7500cm/ 75m/ 0.075km
  coz i plan to go for a looong walk across the island
  
  anyone care to enlighten me

  if no indicate diff metrics or units then shd assume same unit

  & normally how long does normal average person take for 1km distance with walking?

  normal stroll, for male....every stride is i think..... 50cm per second....?
  assuming straight road with no traffic lights or obstacles and walking at constant pace

  so it'll end up ard 1.8km/hr
  d route i planned is ard 20km, it'll take me roughly half day to complete then

  from my experience in the army
  
  1km will take about 10~15 mins depending on walking speed

  all in cm...
  
  so 1 : 75000 means 1 cm on the map represents 75000 cm on the actual ground; which equivalents to 750m and .75 km.
