ADEN, Yemen (AP) — After reaching Yemen's shores in a packed migrant boat, the young Ethiopian coffee farmer was plunged into a living hell. The smugglers wanted thousands of US dollars in ransom from the illegal migrants, and they used him as an example of what would happen if they didn't pay.
Each day for a month, they inflicted new tortures on him, Omar Farrag told The Associated Press. They put him in a tank of water and lit a fire underneath it. They wrapped his limbs with tight barbed wire. At times, they heated the barbed wire.
Finally, his younger brother came all the way from Ethiopia with US$2,000 in ransom money. The smugglers decided they could squeeze more money out of him too, so they tortured his brother so badly it ended up killing him, Farrag said.

To their credit, their tremendous personal effort and immense diligence to achieve or surpass the human limits of grace and beauty in the sport, are clear for all to see. My only concern for them, is whether they're given due support (emotionally, financially, etc) along the way, or are they being taken advantage of, mere tools being abused by their government and trainers for national glory, facing threat of punishment and/or discarded without due compensation when they fail to 'win for their country'. Hopefully welfare conditions across all countries improve (and continue to improve) over the decades, and may ethical human rights prevail in the 21st century, Trump notwithstanding.

After President Trump’s executive order last week, their resettlement in America was put on hold. Now, the organization responsible for processing refugees in sub-Saharan Africa, Church World Service, says that order will now be their death sentence.
