[Singapore] - I recently ran into a former schoolmate around Raffles Place, and, after we exchanged the requisite pleasantries, he asked: "How come you're not wearing heels and makeup? Isn't it a work day?"
I was confused, given that I was wearing closed-toe flats and one of the (many) solid-coloured shift dresses in my wardrobe reserved for the office.
I am not in the habit of wearing either heels or makeup, except when suitable occasions arise, I replied. My work takes me from factories in far-flung industrial estates to plush boardrooms - sometimes on the same day - and I have to dress accordingly.
"But girls look better if they dress up more," he said earnestly. "More professional right?"
"I'll consider it if you start wearing heels and makeup too," I responded. He laughed, and we parted ways shortly after. But the encounter left me both furious and depressed.

The half-brother of North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has been assassinated in Malaysia, South Korea's Yonhap news agency reported Tuesday.
The agency quoted a Seoul government source as saying Kim Jong-Nam was killed on Monday. The source gave no further details.
Officials in Seoul were not immediately available for comment.
The 45-year-old was poisoned by two unidentified female agents using poisoned needles at an airport in Kuala Lumpur, according to South Korean broadcaster TV Chosun.

This translates into hundreds of thousands of medical doctors who cheated their way to a medical degree. How many of them are practicing Medicine in Singapore now? Because the Sg Govt says there is a severe shortage of medical doctors in Singapore. Meanwhile, as has been the case for the last few decades, every year Singapore JC students with straight As, more deserving and competent than the cheating medical students in India, fail to get into the ridiculously small number of places in the NUS and (only recently opened) NTU Med schools, not only wasting valuable local talent and competence, but also financially ruining many parents who sacrifice their life savings to send their son or daughter to overseas Med schools, which accept them on the basis of their worthy grades and achievements, even as NUS & NTU doesn't have enough places to do so. And this continues year after year.
