This movie reminded me of the time that I had visited and stayed in one of those large shanty village in the Philippines. I spoke to the locals there and they told me that the reason there were no police patrolling within their village because they were afraid to get killed by the gangsters or drug dealers living within their village.
Twenty-two years ago, while I was staying in a small hotel in Jatinegara, South Jakarta, Indonesia, I witnessed several times personally in the late evening or early morning, sometimes one or two military personnel would go to the front reception in the lobby and collect some cash from the clerk or the owner himself. The owner told me its for the protection fee. This activity happened only to small hotels in Jakarta or other parts of Indonesia.
