Kaizer Chiefs 0 United 0United ended their South African tour by losing 4-3 on penalties to Kaizer Chiefs, in the first-ever match to be shown live on ManUtd.com.Chris Eagles and goalkeeper Ben Foster missed their spot-kicks but the outcome had more to do with United's failure to score when they dominated the first half.
Dong Fangzhou, who scored the winner against the same opponents on Tuesday, could have bagged a hat-trick. Kieran Richardson and Giuseppe Rossi were also off-target but all should be forgiven after a busy tour spanning three South African stadiums in seven days.
Sir Alex Ferguson made four changes to Tuesday's starting eleven, drafting in Dong, Luke Steele, Phil Bardsley and Jonny Evans, who impressed as Wes Brown's partner in central defence. Simpson, Solskjaer, O'Shea and Foster all stepped down, and only the latter came on in this stalemate.
Richardson, retained at left midfield, missed his first decent chance in the 4th minute when his shot from Ryan Giggs' square pass rolled to the left of the Chiefs' goal.
Motaung then returned fire for Kaizer Chiefs but again the goalkeeper, in this case United's Steele, was untroubled as the shot flew high and wide. Steele's long free-kick found Dong Fangzhou unmarked in the area in the 10th minute, but he delayed his shot long enough for the goalkeeper to advance from his line and make a good block.
