Arguably, Manchester Uniteds greatest ever fullback, Denis Irwin played in 499 matches for United and scored 33 goals. A dependable, quiet man by nature, Denis showed his versatility by playing either the right back or left back roles with equal class. A player who loved to get forward, his crossing was superb and he popped up with a decent goals return. Also quick to take penalties and freekicks. I dont believe i ever saw him miss a penalty. His freekick at Anfield also sticks in my mind (in the match where it was later claimed that Grobbelaar 'threw') I dont believe however that any keeper would have stopped that particular freekick. Another 30 yarder also sticks in my memory against Coventry in the first title winning season. Described by the man himself on Steve Bruces video diary "i was 30 yards out like, so i just hit it like". No fancyness, just got the job done.
Yet another masterstroke by Ferguson, who was impressed by Irwins performance for Oldham against United in the FA cup, he was signed for a mere £625,000. Kicked out by Leeds early in his career as not being good enough he went on to win 7 premier league titles, 3 FA cups, 1 League cup, 1 Champions league medal, 1 European cup winners cup medal, 1 European super cup medal, 1 Internental cup medal. The man from Keano's county of Cork was also capped by his native Ireland 56 times and scored 4 goals.
