[b]Preview Manchester United vs Tottenham.
Former Leeds United striker Alan Smith could make a shock return to Manchester United's first-team squad for Saturday's Premiership clash with Tottenham at Old Trafford.
The 25-year-old has been sidelined for the last seven months since breaking his left leg and dislocating his ankle during last term's FA Cup fifth round defeat at Liverpool.
Smith has made three recent appearances for the reserves and has targeted Saturday's game for his first-team return, saying: "To come on as a sub would be no problem. But I think 90 minutes of Premiership football would be very difficult at the moment.
"I'm fine as far as the injury is concerned. I still need more gym work, but I also need matches."
Gabriel Heinze, Nemanja Vidic and Gary Neville are doubts for the game as United aim to make it four wins out of four against sides from the capital at the start of this season. Sir Alex Ferguson's team are the early Premiership leaders after netting ten goals in their three victories against Fulham, Charlton Athletic and Watford.
Meanwhile, Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes serve the final game of their three-match bans following their red cards in the pre-season friendly win against FC Porto.
Spurs boss Martin Jol is confident that Bulgaria international Dimitar Berbatov will be fit for this weekend's clash despite picking up an injury in Saturday's Euro 2008 qualifier against Romania.
The 25-year-old former Bayer Leverkusen star suffered an abductor strain in the second half of the 2-2 draw and missed Bulgaria's clash with Slovenia on Wednesday.
However, the game comes too soon for captain Ledley King who faces another week on the sidelines with a knee injury while new signing Steed Malbranque has a groin problem.
After finishing fifth last term and qualifying for this season's UEFA Cup, Spurs have been disappointing so far, losing to Everton and Bolton although they did pick up three points from a 2-0 victory aganst Sheffield United.
Last term at Old Trafford United drew 1-1 with Spurs, Mikael Silvestre scoring a seventh minte goal for Ferguson's side before Jermaine Jenas snatched a second-half equaliser for Spurs.
