Former United captain Roy Keane officially took charge of Sunderland on Tuesday and revealed he could lean on his former boss Sir Alex Ferguson as he looks to strengthen his squad.
The 35-year-old, who has signed a three-year deal at the Stadium of Light, gave 12-and-a-half years' service at Old Trafford during a glorious playing career. At a packed press conference unveiling the Irishman to the media, Keane revealed has already had contact with his former manager.
"I've played under some great managers and I hope I can take the best of all of them," he said. "I was very, very fortunate to play under Sir Alex. I've spoken to him briefly over the last few days, and I'm sure he'll lend me a few players if I need them."
The struggling Championship club won their first game of the season 2-0 against West Brom on Monday as Keane watched on from the stands. Contrary to reports claiming he would be joined by former United coach Brian Kidd, Keane has appointed Leicester's Tony Loughlan as his assistant.
Keane met the Black Cats players on Sunday, the day before they faced West Brom. His words, or at least his arrival at the club, seemed to have an immediate effect. However, the Irishman has a huge job on his hands, Sunderland are currently 23rd in the Championship.
