Mikael Silvestre says United cannot afford a September collapse like last season.
The Reds have won three out of three so far this term, but had the same positive start in 2005/06. Sir Alex Ferguson's side then went on to record draws with Manchester City and Liverpool and were beaten by Blackburn at Old Trafford.
The 29-year-old French defender, who recently signed a contract extension until 2009, has urged United to keep the winning run going. He said: "We cannot afford to do what we did last year."
United were suffering from horrendous injury problems at the time, with Gary Neville, Gabriel Heinze and Roy Keane all out of action. However, Silvestre says United have much more strength in depth this season.
"If you look at it, we have more players this time," he said. "In defence alone we have Gary Neville, Gabriel Heinze and Nemanja Vidic to come back into the side which is going to generate major competition for places."
