Jonny Evans could earn 100 caps for Northern Ireland, according to Sir Alex Ferguson, who says the teenage defender has a bright future ahead of him.
The Belfast-born 18-year-old made his international debut at left back on Wednesday in a remarkable 3-2 victory over Spain in their Euro 2008 qualifier at Windsor Park. He will complete a loan spell at Royal Antwerp this season, but Sir Alex is confident it won't be long before he is knocking on the first team door.
"The boy is a terrific lad and has a marvellous future ahead of him," he told Manchester United Radio. "It was a tremendous opportunity and I'm proud he's made his debut.
"He's a tall, he has great balance, good pace, reads the game well and can pass the ball. He has every attribute you need to be a centre-half."
Evans has been at United since he was 12, and has impressed in the youth and reserves ranks in the last two seasons. He is yet to make his United debut, but Northern Ireland's willingness to thrust him into the full squad at a young age is a pleasing sign for Sir Alex.
"It's great that they decided to give him a chance at 18," the boss added. "It fits in with our mantra that we give young players opportunities if they are good enough and have the right temperament. He could go on to get 100 caps for Northern Ireland now."
