Michael Carrick has called on Manchester United to reassert their authority on The Premiership, as the title race starts to hot up.
Portsmouth overtook The Reds at the top of the table on Saturday and Carrick's side then lost their perfect record with a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Sunday.
United are now only ahead of champions Chelsea on goal difference, five points ahead of Liverpool and seven ahead of The Gunners, who still have a game in hand.
After failing to play catch up for the last three seasons, the £18.6 million man is targeting a victory against top flight newcomers Reading to keep up their title ambitions.
"We were disappointed to lose against Arsenal because it was such a huge game but even so, we have given ourselves a platform and we are definitely in the mix.
"It is vital we do not slip because then we have to start chasing other teams and it becomes difficult.
United lacked a cutting edge against Arsene Wenger's men, as the England international made way for John O'Shea in the middle of midfield.
With Wayne Rooney not yet firing on all cylinders and Nemanja Vidic returning to fitness to strengthen the backline, Carrick believes there is still much more to come from Sir Alex Ferguson's side.
"We have played ever so well in a couple of matches but we have not really hit top form yet," he said.
United have the chance to bounce back against The Royals live on Prem Plus from 5.15pm on Saturday. -

Man U is depending too much on one player tonite - Ronaldo. If not becos of his goal, Man U will suffer an embarassing defeat. The draw is a weak result and even at 1-1, they lack ideas in attacking, always trying to make that "beautiful" pass - for fark ? Play direct, brute and effective football, not passing around and getting intercepted.
Its really three points lost and if Man U cannot even beat a newly promoted team there for the taking, they have absolutely no right to challenge the premiership trophy, its disappointing, especially both Arsenal and Chelsea won tonight albeit against better opponents.

Think if Neville's hand ball did not give away the penalty, Reading would have no chance against Utd at all.
Ronaldo played really well this game. His late goal was brillant, precise and deadly. It was really ironic and funny that when he got the ball, the crowd started booing at him and seconds later, he scored.
Fletcher got top rating - 8 - for this game.
Pity Rooney couldn't get past Reading's defence, he seemed to be playing frustrated football.. -

Yea..it was more a deflection off his arm than an intentional hand ball. Rooney should have won a penalty towards the end too. He was heavily marked and pushed down by Reading's defence in the penalty box, but the referee didn't gave it. -
is this surprising, i mean neville and ferdinand are very well known for thier lapses in concentration..this time they pay heavily for it..reading worked really well.
and i notice that whenever the away crowd boos ronaldo, he seems to play better.. -
I felt that Man U performance quite disappointing. I think they were frustrated at Reading who were packing their own half w/ their players when Man u attack. If half the Man U crosses/lob passes were successful, we may have a different result. But in the end, Reading players were at the right place at the right time to stop some of the Man u attacks, this is what i feel......Penalty a bit 'give and take' lah, sometimes this happens. IMO 2 points dropped rather than 1 point gained for Man U

We have one of the best few defenders around already so no pt keep buying defenders already.Vidic n evra juz came last Jan!...it all goes down to hard work in training ground.Give them some time,i believe our defence will be back.remember the period when united had arguly the best defence last season?...I believe every team including chelsea will have those periods where their defence r on low form,dreaming.I dun believe there's any team in the world that can be as compact as italy's.

This match result has to be Fergie's fault! He always rest his players before a CL match than drop points. Its time fergie wake up, how many times does he realise? Wtf was he thinking playing Richardson and Fletcher together in midfield? With these 2, don't expect to win the midfield. Trying to fit one in is bad enough but both together?
Fergie deserve to go cos seems like he don't learn anything after so many years. You cannot put out a weaker team on away matches, especially away matches! There are no easy away matches nowadays. -
I don't understand the reason why SAF Put Flecther Instead of The "Baby Face Assassin" then C.Ronaldo can play @ his best position which is winger and a standard 4-4-2 formation and not like yesterday scholes was playing support striker which he seems very uncomfortable,running around like headless chicken can't get much of the ball @ all
