Ramage seeks better luck
Newcastle defender Peter Ramage is looking to put his Old Trafford nightmare out of mind when the Magpies visit Manchester on Sunday.
The Reds won 2-0 at home against the Geordies in March of last season, courtesy of two Wayne Rooney goals. But the United striker had Ramage to thank for his first, intercepting a weak backpass to Shay Given, which Rooney gleefully chipped over the stranded Newcastle goalkeeper.
"It was the first time it had happened to me and I hope itÂ’s the last," he recalls in an interview with United Review.
But the Magpies defender says some advice from Alan Shearer helped him not be affected by the mistake.
"It happens to a lot of players in their careers – on the same day Steven Gerrard did exactly the same for Liverpool in against Arsenal.
"We were watching it on television on the coach home. I had to pop into the toilet and when I came out Alan Shearer shouted me to take a look. Sure enough in the replays there was he was, Thierry Henry latching on to it to give Arsenal a last-minute victory.
"Al said all players do this at some time and I should just forget it. It made me feel a lot better - but donÂ’t be surprised to see me put the ball into the stands if I get a similar situation today."
