PAUL GASCOIGNE is tipping Michael Carrick to become EnglandÂ’s new midfield golden boy.
Manchester United star Carrick will step in for the injured Owen Hargreaves in todayÂ’s Euro Championship crunch against Macedonia.
And Gazza believes his fellow Geordie can set the Old Trafford stage alight after grabbing his chance to impress.
Gazza, who made his name in England’s Italia 90 World Cup campaign, insisted: “Carrick’s a great player.
“He’s one of these guys who never gives the ball away and he’s a brilliant passer.
“He works hard to win the ball and when he gets it he uses it well.
“I was lucky with my international career and Michael’s in the same boat.
“A few years ago Neil Webb got injured and I got my chance to play for England. I made the most of it from there and didn’t look back.
“It looks like Michael will get his opportunity against Macedonia and he deserves it. He’s started the season well and he has to take his chance while he can.”
