Smith set for United start
Sir Alex Ferguson is set to hand Alan Smith his first start for eight months when Manchester United begin their defence of the Carling Cup at Crewe Alexandra on Wednesday.
Smith has been restricted to two brief appearances from the bench since recovering from the broken leg he suffered in an FA Cup tie at Liverpool in February.
"There are players who are fighting for first team places and those like myself who are coming back from injury who will be playing on Wednesday. So it's a vital game for us and one that we're all looking forward to."
Gabriel Heinze and Mikael Silvestre are expected to return after injury, while youngsters Ryan Shawcross, Kieran Lee and David Gray are also likely to feature at Gresty Road. -

FURIOUS Alex Ferguson laid into Manchester United after they stumbled past Crewe in the Carling Cup.
A 119th-minute winner from 18-year-old debutant Kieran Lee saved the senior starsÂ’ blushes.
And Ferguson, whose holders now visit Southend in the fourth round, rapped: “I am really disappointed with the performance.
"I told the players these teams will battle and make it hard and we would have to match that. But we didnÂ’t. We allowed them to make the play.
“Maybe it was a bit more difficult for some of the senior players to get motivated.
“We showed a careless attitude.
“It took Kieran Lee to save me embarrassment. I certainly did not want to go to penalties, as I think I have only won one shootout. -

Win delights young hero Lee
Predictably for an 18-year-old fresh from scoring an extra-time winner on his first-team debut, Kieran Lee was jubilant after Wednesday night's victory at Crewe.
The versatile youngster sealed a dramatic win for Sir Alex Ferguson's side by slotting home in the 118th minute at Gresty Road, as the cup holders edged into the fourth round.
"I'm delighted with the win," he told MUTV. "We might not have deserved it really because we didn't play very well but I'm pleased to score and the win was the most important thing.
"I just wanted to make sure I got a shot off, and luckily it went in. It was buzzing really!"
Lee, one of five Reserves to make their senior bow against Alex, admitted that he and his young cohorts were elated to get a taster of first-team action.
"All the youngsters have been delighted to get the chance to be involved," he said. "I think all the Reserve players have looked at the game and hoped for their chance, and I was one of them."
Next up for United is a trip to Southend in the fourth round, and Lee is hopeful that he and his burgeoning colleagues will be called upon once more.
"We'll all be hoping for another chance," he admitted. "Down at Southend it's a long trip but everyone will be looking forward to it."
