Gabriel Heinze says defeat and an earlier-than-expected Carling Cup exit at the hands of lowly Championship side Southend was hurtful.
But the 28-year-old Argentine defender is urging his team-mates not to allow the result to harm the Reds' Premiership and European campaigns.
"These type of matches hurt and stay on your mind for a few days," he said. "But we must go forward and remember that we are top of the Premiership and doing well in the Champions League."
But that doesn't mean the result will simply be brushed under the carpet. Gaby added: "Players were angry with themselves and you could see the same look on everybodyÂ’s face. You never like to lose and even more so when you are a team with our history.
"Other teams canÂ’t openly say they have the ability to win the Carling Cup but United can always win it and elimination is a big blow."
Heinze made his sixth start of the season in Carling Cup on Tuesday in what has been a season disrupted by spells on the sidelines.
Seemingly over the muscular problems, he is in direct competition for the left-back slot with Patrice Evra - outstanding so far this term - when the Reds travel to Blackburn on Saturday.
