Did SAF kill off his once promising career? It all went downhill after Smith was earmarked as successor to Roy Keane.

I always thought Smith was a fox in the box type of striker.
i wouldn't said Man Utd or SAF kill his promising career, but whether he or Man Utd made a right decision in signing him might have been the main thing, rememeber he was already losing ground as a striker and was being used as a right midfielder at the ending part of his Leeds days even thou he was used to formed a great partnership with that Aust striker (kinda forgot at this point in time) initially and also i wouldn't label him a "fox in the box" kinda striker, he is not nibble enough to be rated as that.
i may be wrong here, but i kinda agreed with SAF when he decided to make him a DM with his never said die, never sian in a tackle and his super agressive natural it does seems to me to be a logic choice, furthermore he wasn't going anywhere being a striker or a right midfielder in Man Utd, cos with players like Ronaldo on the right, Ronney, Ruud and Saha completing the 2 starting place as a striker his future does seems dim unless something is being done to his position, however even thou it might have been a great idea and logic choice but sometimes great idea or logic choice doesn't equal to correct and sucessful as far as football or any other sports are concern...
