Anyone still questioning United's title credentials should look at the trail of defeated opponents all tipping the Reds to go all the way this season.
Former Reds winger Keith Gillespie, who scored in Sheffield United's 2-1 defeat to Sir Alex Ferguson's side at on Saturday, is the latest in a long line of admirers of his first club's start to the campaign.
United are three points in front of current title holders Chelsea and the gap will grow to six if United beat Jose Mourinho's men at Old Trafford this Sunday.
"I think United [will win the title]," pronounced Gillespie after watching Rooney spoil his side's valiant efforts at Bramall Lane.
"And that's my head and my heart saying that," he adds. "The way they've started this season is fantastic."
United's fine start to the season has transformed the team's hopes of preventing Chelsea claiming a third title. Gillespie feels the secret to the Reds' success so far is the wealth of attacking talent.
"They have so many players all over the pitch who can hurt you, and they're very difficult to get hold of," he said. "You think you've marked one man, and then all of a sudden somebody else pops up. United have so much class."
