Euro failure would be 'criminal'
RIO FERDINAND admits it would be “criminal” if Manchester United blow their chance to reach the Champions League knockout stages.
Alex FergusonÂ’s men have their third and final chance to secure a safe passage through Group F when Benfica visit Old Trafford tomorrow.
United only need a point but will remember the nightmare that saw the same Portuguese club put them out 12 months ago.
Ferdinand said: “The Benfica game is very, very important. “It would be criminal to throw this chance away now, having been in the position we were in.
“We would rather be in the position where we had qualified. But now we need to make sure we get a positive result. We have made it difficult for ourselves.”
The England defender, 28, also warned United’s strikers they need to start killing off teams in Europe’s biggest competition. He added: “We couldn’t have controlled the last two games more than we did without scoring.
“After the Celtic match, it was one of the weirdest feelings ever coming into the changing rooms. “There were all the emotions. We were angry, upset, almost baffled in a way, as we controlled the whole game. “We had to finish off a couple of the chances we had and we would have been all right. But we didn’t. “That is the difference with the Champions League — you have to make sure you kill games off.” -

Ferguson demands clinical finish
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson wants his side to be more clinical in their Champions League decider against Benfica on Wednesday.
United faltered in their games against FC Copenhagen and Celtic and still need a point from their final Group F match at Old Trafford to go through.
He told the club website: "It won't be an easy game but as long as we remember to finish teams off we will be OK.
"That's going to be an issue, when we get chances we've got to take them."
Ferguson added: "This is a game you can't trifle with. It's too important for us. If we get chances we have to take them, but I think we've got a chance."
Last season, Benfica eliminated Liverpool before losing to eventual winners Barcelona in the quarter-finals.
United failled to qualify for the knockout stages last season and finished bottom of the group after losing to the Portuguese champions.
Benfica coach Fernando Santos believes his side are capable of causing an upset against United for the second successive season.
He said: "The match against Manchester United is a real final for us.
"We believe victory is possible and trust we will also have a bit of luck.
"Qualifying is very open because United are not as strong in recent weeks as they have been." -

That Benfica goal was defending lapse.. Excellent goal.. And after that was simplay fanatabulous!!! Even the commentator said that Benfica's goal was under siege!! Attacking like nobody's business!!! The way they keep going forward.. omigoodieness.. Yeah all 3 goals were headers and Vidic's one was the sweetest.. Ronaldo did that stinging shot of his again.. Rooney needs more work.. Fletcher rocks wahaha..
