ALAN SMITH has been left in limbo at Manchester United. The striker has not figured in the Reds squad since November. Now he is starting to wonder at his lack of first-team opportunities despite insisting he is fit and raring to go.
Smith has been the subject of enquiries from other Premiership clubs — Everton and Wigan are particularly keen. But Old Trafford boss Alex Ferguson wants to keep Smith at the club.
The striker, 26, has already turned down a loan move to Championship outfit Cardiff as he battles for his place in the side. Smith broke his ankle last February in an FA cup tie at Anfield. He went through intensive rehabilitation to battle back and returned to the squad in October.
But his comeback was too soon for Fergie, who sent him on a special fitness drive. That is over now and Smith feels in better condition that at any time in his career.
Ferguson clearly wants to keep him as he continues to go on an all-out assault on three fronts. Henrik Larsson will return to Helsingborgs in March so Ferguson needs Smith as back-up.
