Martin Tyler's stats and facts column
Grant Tway Martin, I notice that Cristiano Ronaldo has got 16 Premiership goals already this season. I was wondering if this is a record for a midfielder already - or how many he has to get to be the highest midfielder scorer in one season of the Premiership?
MARTIN SAYS: It is not an outright record yet Grant, but with eight games to go and Cristiano Ronaldo in the form he is, you wouldn't bet against him surpassing the season's best for a midfielder which does indeed stand at 16. Of course, these questions drag up the old debate of whether we class wingers as midfielders, but neither Andrei Kanchelskis in 1995-96 and Frank Lampard in 2005-06 played up front as such, and are the joint record holders for a Premiership season. Other more 'bona fide' midfielders, such as Gus Poyet, Freddie Ljungberg and Robert Pires have also led the scoring charts for non-strikers, and here is a complete rundown of the top midfield scorers for every
