Rio boost for United
Sir Alex Ferguson has received some welcome relief amid a defensive injury crisis after initial examinations suggested Rio Ferdinand did not suffer major damage to his groin in Manchester United's FA Cup semi-final.
The England defender limped off during the first-half of Saturday's 4-1 win over Watford, adding to an injury list that already included Gary Neville, Nemanja Vidic, Mikael Silvestre and John O'Shea.
Immediately after the game, Ferdinand expressed the hope he would not be out too long and it appears those wishes will be granted.
While a return against Middlesbrough on Saturday is far more likely, Ferguson has not entirely given up hope of Ferdinand being involved against Sheffield United at Old Trafford tomorrow when United will look to extend their lead at the Premiership summit to six points.
The same is also true of John O'Shea, who sat out Saturday's victory with a minor calf injury.
Should neither Ferdinand nor O'Shea make tomorrow's game, Ferguson will face a dilemma over who should fill the right-back slot.
Darren Fletcher is favourite to retain the role after doing well as an emergency replacement for Ferdinand in a back four which saw Gabriel Heinze partner Wes Brown in the middle.
The only other plausible option is to hand 18-year-old Northern Irishman Craig Cathcart his debut.
Normally a central defender, Cathcart has impressed and reserve-team and academy level this term and been a key figure in United's run to the Youth Cup final. -

Manchester United have sent Louis Saha to see a specialist amid growing concerns at Old Trafford about their injury list. Although most of Ferguson's problems are in defence, the United manager has become increasingly concerned by Saha's inability to recover from a recurrent hamstring strain that has limited him to four starts since the turn of the year.
Saha was a virtual ever-present for the opening half of the season but has not begun a match since February 27, when United beat Reading 3-2 in an FA Cup fifth-round replay, and the club's medical staff are uncertain about how much part, if any, the Frenchman will be able to take in the remaining few weeks of the season.
The better news for the Premiership leaders is that Rio Ferdinand and John O'Shea hope to be available for Saturday's game at home to Middlesbrough. However, Ferguson is without Nemanja Vidic until mid-May because of a broken collarbone, Gary Neville is still recovering from a groin strain and Patrice Evra faces extensive treatment for a calf injury if he is to be available for Milan's visit to Old Trafford on Tuesday in the first leg of the Champions League semi-final. There are also concerns that Park Ji-sung's season may be over because of a knee injury. -

Ranko Stojic, Saha's agent, told The Times yesterday that the France striker should have recovered fully from a hamstring problem "in the next seven to ten days" and that his client was confident that he would be available for the second leg in Milan on May 2. -

Vidic back for Man Utd finals
Nemanja Vidic could be fit for Manchester United's FA Cup final clash with Chelsea and potentially the Champions League final.
The Serbian international is recovering ahead of schedule after suffering a dislocated shoulder against Blackburn recently and club medical staff are confident he will be ready and match fit for the FA Cup Final against Chelsea on May 19 and the Champions League Final in Athens four days later, should United beat AC Milan to get there. -
