Transfer Rumours: April 07
United and Arsenal are tipped to rival each other for the signing of French international winger Franck Ribery this summer.
The Marseille winger has openly voiced his desire to feature in the Champions League next season, and he may depart France to realise his ambition.
The Daily Mirror expects Ribery to command a fee of around £13million, with long-term admirers United and Arsenal the main contenders for his signature.
Rumours persist that United are set to renew their interest in Tottenham's Bulgarian international striker Dimitar Berbatov when the transfer window re-opens.
The on-song forward was linked with United before signing for Spurs last summer, and the player himself claimed there was strong interest in his services from Old Trafford.
Martin Jol has voiced his intent to keep hold of Berbatov beyond the end of this season, but various tabloids continue to link United with a summer bid in the region of £19million.
Berbatov joins long term targets Owen Hargreaves and Nani on Sir Alex Ferguson's supposed shopping list, while Mikael Silvestre and Wes Brown continue to be linked with Newcastle.

ronaldinho inspired barca to the double last season.... its a relatively difficult task and commands respect....
whereas ronaldo showboated for quite a few seasons before making an impact this season... and if man utd dun win the title, ronaldo still has nothing major to show for his efforts..... personal accolades notwithstanding -

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson has pulled the plug on talks with Southampton for fullback Gareth Bale.
The People says Ferguson was leading the race to land the acclaimed youngster but, after further checks, has decided to keep faith with current Old Trafford incumbents Patrice Evra and Gabriel Heinze. -
Giggs wants Bale at Man Utd
Manchester United midfielder Ryan Giggs is keen to see Gareth Bale move to Old Trafford.
The Southampton left-back is a target for United boss Sir Alex Ferguson, along with Tottenham and Newcastle United.
The Daily Express says Giggs is doing his best to convince Wales team-mate Bale to join United at the end of this season.

Man Utd go for unsettled Spurs striker Defoe
Manchester United are ready to pounce for unsettled Tottenham striker Jermain Defoe.
The Sun says Defoe is growing increasingly frustrated by the amount of time he is spending on the bench at White Hart Lane this season.
And he fears he will never be first choice under boss Martin Jol.
Defoe has started just three of Spurs' last 16 games and knows he is behind Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane in the pecking order.
Yet he has still hit 16 goals this season - a tally that has impressed United boss Alex Ferguson.
Fergie is in the market for a reliable finisher to partner Wayne Rooney next season and believes Defoe could fit the bill.
Spurs would demand at least £10million but United could offer the likes of Wes Brown, John O'Shea, Kieran Richardson or Darren Fletcher in part-exchange. -

DiarioSport says while Chelsea and Arsenal have expressed interest in the Israeli, United have all but signed Assulin, with just some problems regarding a move to Manchester delaying the deal.
Barca have made a new contract offer to Assulin, but it falls well short of what United have tabled to the striker's parents.
Barca coaches regard Assulin as a virtual sure thing and now are resigning themselves to losing the player in a similar fashion to Gerard Pique three years ago. -

Sporting Lisbon anxious for Man Utd target Nani to pen deal
Sporting Lisbon are anxious to extend winger Nani's contract before the summer market opens.
A long-term target for Manchester United, Nani has just over a year to run on his present deal, which carries an affordable £7 million buyout clause.
United No2 Carlos Queiroz has studied Nani closely this season and recommended the 20 year-old to manager Sir Alex Ferguson. Well aware of the growing interest in the winger, Sporting president Filipe Soares Franco is desperate to extend his deal - and hike up his buyout clause.
Franco wants to secure Nani to a new deal through to 2013 and bump up his buyout clause to £20 million.

Roma fans push De Rossi closer to Barcelona, Man Utd
Manchester United are being linked with Roma midfielder Daniele De Rossi.
Gazzetta dello Sport says United are among some of Europe's biggest clubs, including Barcelona and Real Madrid, chasing the £10 million-rated midfielder.
De Rossi was booed by Roma fans during yesterday's 0-0 draw with Lazio after news broke over the weekend of serious interest from Barca.
"I am happy at Roma," said De Rossi afterwards, "but no-one can put hand on heart and say they know what is going to happen in the future. You never know what can happen."
United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is a big fan of De Rossi and has been watching the player since he broke into Roma's first team as a fleet-of-foot winger. -

Richardson can be our utility defender, now if only he can play right side.
as for defoe, I do agree it is a risk but given that he would want to show that it is a mistake leaving him out, he should be up for the challenge. -

de rossi can be a little too hot headed at times. i prefer hargreaves, a more solid rock who sits deeper. paired with carrick, it might just be the english version of gattuso and pirlo. besides, didn't der kaiser say he might consider a deal?
my dream signings would be Berba, Nani/ Perdersen, Hargreaves, and Glen Johnson as cover for rightback. I wouldn't mind if Deco made the switch too.
players out would be Richardson and maybe, just maybe, Saha. Saha has fantastic pace, very valuable for fast breaks, but he's horribly fragile. We'll really have to wait and see then. -
Man Utd boss Ferguson determined to cut loose Saha
Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is ready to listen to offers for striker Louis Saha.
The Daily Mail says Ferguson has completely lost faith in Louis Saha and the Frenchman will be sold if at all possible this summer. Ideally, Ferguson would like Tottenham's Dimitar Berbatov in his place.
United face a struggle to snare Berbatov, one of the Premiership's star turns. Initial soundings have not yielded much encouragement, and yesterday Spurs manager Martin Jol reiterated the club's determination to hang on to him.
Chelsea are also keen on Berbatov but Jol insisted: "I have no fears. The chairman wouldn't sanction it even if I would like to sell him.
"We always keep our best players, 99 per cent over the last five or six years, even before my time. I don't see any reason why we shouldn't carry on.
"We've made a lot of profit over the last six months so we don't have to sell players and Dimitar tells everybody that he's very happy here and he's happy with his performances." -
Defender prepared for Manchester United exit
The Spanish defender has found his best form during a season-long loan stint at Real Zaragoza, and the 20-year-old admits he would prefer to stay at the Estadio La Romareda rather than become a fixture of the Reds reserves.
"Both options are attractive, but at Zaragoza things are going very well and I feel important, which is crucial for any player," said Pique. "It would be my dream to play for Zaragoza and hear the Champions League hymn."

but its understandable that he'll want to leave and seek first team football because it'll be hard to break up the partnership of rio and vidic. -
