MANCHESTER UNITED have scrapped their plan to buy Owen Hargreaves after Bayern Munich sent the price spiralling. Alex Ferguson thought he had agreed an £18million deal for the England midfielder. But Bayern have told the United boss their asking price is now above £20m.Even though Ferguson will have a £40m summer transfer kitty, he will not be held to ransom by any club. He is ready to turn his attention elsewhere, having already identified other targets. Ferguson is determined to land Spurs’ Bulgarian striker Dimitar Berbatov, although White Hart Lane boss Martin Jol is desperate to hold on to him.
The United manager said: “We have outlined two or three targets which we have made the chief executive David Gill aware of. “This club has celebrity status around the world so you do not worry about attracting players.”
But Ferguson admits they will always be second best in the spending stakes because of Roman Abramovich’s millions. Fergie said: “The real competition comes when someone like Michael Essien becomes available and Chelsea spend £27m on him.
“They can do that and outbid us all. “We need to identify the players we want and get them quickly and quietly.”
