Van der Sar still good? Replacement needed?

He still good? Noticed this season that he hasn't kept many clean sheets. He also doesn't dive for some balls which he should have.
Schmeichel still the very best. -

he signed a one year extension to his contract..so he'll be here for another season. i think it's likely he'll still be our no.1 and foster will be loaned out again.

he still has the marbles to go on i feel. he has the stature and the build - none of the goalie in the premier league can match that -except for Petr Cech.
ben foster and Thomas both lack the built. don't forget he was wobbily but he did saved a penalty from Man City. -

Don't you notice that VDS doesn't really dive full stretch for balls anymore? I'm using Schmeichel as a comparison here. -

Schmeichel is in a class of his own, no one can match him.
But i think VDS comes closest compared to other goalkeepers we had after Schmeichel left.

FOSTER PREPARED TO WAIT
Ben Foster is prepared to accept spending a season as Edwin van der Sar's understudy in order to improve his chances of becoming Manchester United's number one in the future.
Foster's stock has risen during his two years out on loan at Watford and he is being tipped to take over from Van der Sar at United.
That is unlikely to happen next season, as the Dutchman is not ready to step aside, but Foster is prepared to bide his time.
"It will be massively disappointing," he told Sky Sports News. "I have had two good seasons out on loan and love playing week in and week out, being first-choice goalkeeper.
"I love everything that goes with it, you get so much confidence knowing you are going to play every Saturday.
"You can go out so confident knowing you are a great goalkeeper, whereas if you only get the odd game you know you have got to impress and it comes with a bit of added pressure.
"But in the long run I have got to look at my long-term future at United and hopefully it is going to lie there and if it means spending a season on the bench and biding my time, then so be it."
Foster is aware that his international hopes are likely to nosedive if he is left to kick his heels on the bench.
"If you are not playing, you can't expect to be picked for your national team and that is part and parcel of playing for England," admitted Foster.
"You have to be playing and playing well and if you are not playing, then you can't expect to be picked." -
I think Edwin should retire gloriously after the next season and it's time for Foster to step up and take his place as United's number 1 shot-stopper. But Foster has to learn to cut down his mistakes - like the one against Man City, clearing the ball straight at Vasell.

If Foster wants to risk being no.2 at old trafford, he had better perform when the opportunity beckons. If not, once another good young keeper surfaces on the scene and man u swoops for him, foster's chances are gone.

sometime a keeper does not need to make tons of saves, gd keepers oso install confidents to his defenders. VDS may nt make many great save nowadays but i feel he still manage his defs n install confidents to his teams..

I would be a bit worried if Foster takes over the No.1 next season... Clearly he is not ready yet... He still makes quite a number of mistakes at Watford... The one difference is at Watford when he make a mistake... not many would take notice But if at United, it would be played over and over on the tv, mentioned frequently on the papers... the pressure will be much more than where he is now at Watford...
And of course, with such pressure it could effect his performance in his following matches... We have seen many good keepers doing well at a smaller club but when they move to bigger clubs... The seem to lose their skill... Maybe someone like David James. -
hmm hope van der sar is still as good next season
our poland keeper tomasz seems quite shaky at times when dealing with corner kicks -
i'd stick with VDS for another season at least until Toms or Foster show a much better improvement in their performance, yea, VDS might have let in some shaky goals, but at least he was there to save the important ones

Ben Foster by his admission has already stated that if he had to stay one more season to be on the bench as a sub, so be it, that only concludes that he still is not prepared/confie\dence enuff to take over the gloves from VDS..
lets be realistic, if VDS really went after tis season, we dun really have anyone who is capable yet to take over.. i'm glad SAF managed to give him a one year extension to his contract. -

Van der Sar is not diving as per his younger days. How many clean sheets the entire season? I don't think even think there's more than 10. -
I don't believe he is to be blamed for all the goals, look at Man Utd defending at times, not even the best goalkeepers can save them. Lay off VDS , appreciate him , he has been consistent through out the season. Period.Originally posted by Rock^Star:I beg to differ .

I think if chelsea is gonna let cudicini go..he would be a good replacement for VDS..the botak at sheffield united is also not bad.

Ben Foster is climbing up fast, and with proper defence infront of him, who's to say he can't be better than EVS.
SAF has been known for being ruthless with his keepers. I bet he stayed with EVS cause he has no other choice. But not to allow foster to be further on loan has signifies his desire to change and give EVS some challenge.
To me, EVS,or another keeper could have saved some of those Milan's goals.
Imagine Crech there.. I bet he would have done better.
I was disappointed at how EVS performed in the last few matches.. Yes, he did come up with a few world-class saves, let's not denied that.
But for those which end up in the net, he could have made a difference but the fact is he didn't.
Well, he still have one more game to prove me wrong, FA CUP Finals, where is is up against Crech. Let's see then..
