Hargreaves joining Man Utd, says Beckenbauer
England midfielder Owen Hargreaves looks to have finally sealed his move to Manchester United from Bayern Munich.
Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer confirmed the 26-year-old would be leaving the club for a fee of around £17million after a season-long pursuit by the Premiership champions.
'Owen Hargreaves will go,' Beckenbauer told the DFB-Doppelpass programme on German TV on Sunday. 'It's also the wish of the player.
'Everything is right and it is also financially right,' continued Beckenbauer.
Asked if reports about the size of the fee were true, he said: 'It will be around that size.'
The Canada-born midfield anchorman represented hometown club Calgary Foothills FC from 1994 to 1997 and had been contracted to Bayern until 2010.
His breakthrough year was 2001 when he starred in the Bayern team that won the Champions League, the Intercontinental Cup and the Bundesliga.
Hargreaves won many admirers for his performances in what was an otherwise disappointing performance by England in last year's World Cup.

As usual, I'll be cynical and only believe it when he's smiling next to Fergie holding u a United jersey with his name and number on it.
Still, it does beg the question. Where will he play? To be frank, United look crap when they go 4-3-2-1, with Rooney up top on his own. He drops back too much and there's just no finisher to get on the end of things and just smash the ball into the net. But it seems likely that's the way they'll line-up if Hargreaves comes in.
Only other way to accomadate him and keep their better 4-2-3-1 shape is to drop someone, but I don't see anyone from that team going. Oh well, I'll leave that to Fergie. -

That's the exact formation i dun wish to see them play. Rooney likes to drop deep and play off a frontman, which is why during the FA Cup final, before the introduction of Smith, United were creating chances, but were not really threatening to score. I thought Park does that quite well. Rem the match against Bolton where we won 4-1. He finished a cross nicely from Ronaldo, and chip another loose ball in when the goalie fumbled. United get their man with £17m Hargreaves deal
Sir Alex Ferguson was denied the fourth Double of his 20-year reign when Manchester United lost the FA Cup final to Chelsea but there was better news for the Premiership champions last night when Bayern Munich announced that a deal had finally been done to take Owen Hargreaves to Old Trafford.
Hargreaves will sign a four-year contract after the two clubs brought an end to 12 months of tortuous negotiations by agreeing a fee the Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer described as "a little bit over" €25m. That equates to about £17.5m and will be viewed as a good piece of business within Old Trafford, given that Bayern had initially set the price above £20m.
The finer points of the deal are still to be thrashed out but Hargreaves has already started looking for a house in the Manchester area ahead of joining his new team-mates when Ferguson's squad return for pre-season training on July 2. "Owen Hargreaves will go," Beckenbauer told the DFB-Doppelpass programme on German television. "It is the wish of the player. Everything is right for him and it is also financially right for us."
The arrival of Hargreaves signals Ferguson's intentions not to allow Chelsea to re-establish themselves as England's best team next season. It may also add variation to the way United play. Ferguson likes the idea of Hargreaves taking a defensive-midfield role alongside Michael Carrick, with Scholes pushed further forward in an attack-minded 4-2-3-1 formation, ideally with Louis Saha as the most advanced striker. Alternatively, Hargreaves can also fit into a more conventional four-man midfield, giving Ferguson a combative presence in an area of the pitch where United were noticeably sub-standard compared with Chelsea at Wembley. -

I think SAF is thinking of putting Carrick and Owen in the middle, while Scholes may be pushed up front a bit more. but it could means Giggs and Fletcher losing their place.

Bayern Munich have confirmed Owen Hargreaves is leaving the club - with Old Trafford likely to be his destination.
The 26-year-old midfielder has been wanted by United since last summer, but the Bundesliga side have always refused to sell - until now.
Club president Franz Beckenbauer confirmed Hargreaves' imminent exit in an interview with German TV, citing the player's personal desire to move on as the reason behind his departure after ten years with the club.
"Owen is leaving. That was the player's wish. It's a good match and it's also a good deal financially," Beckenbauer told Germany's DSF sports television network.
Beckenbauer did not directly confirm media reports that Bayern will get 25 million euros for Canadian-born Hargreaves. But he did say: "It's in that range."
Reports suggest Hargreaves will sign a four-year deal with the newly crowned Premiership Champions. ManUtd.com will keep you posted on the situation. -

Carrick will welcome arrival of Hargreaves
Michael Carrick will welcome Owen Hargreaves' arrival at Manchester United with open arms.
Bayern Munich president Franz Beckenbauer confirmed yesterday that Hargreaves was leaving the German giants.
While Beckenbauer did not state where Hargreaves was heading, it is almost unthinkable his destination is not Old Trafford given Sir Alex Ferguson's dogged pursuit of the England star and the player's expressed desire to join United.
It is thought only the formality of a medical and actually signing the contract remains for Hargreaves to complete a £17million deal.
He should certainly feel at home when he reports for England B duty in Manchester at lunchtime today, with a training session at United's impressive Carrington complex pencilled in for Tuesday.
And Carrick, who knows the 26-year-old well from England duty, accepts Hargreaves' arrival at United will only enhance their chances of success.
'We are at the biggest club in the world and we want the best players,' said Carrick. 'World-class players are going to strengthen you and Owen is a top player.
'We need a big squad. That has been proved this season when you are fighting on all fronts.'
Hargreaves' arrival should help take some of the weight off Carrick and midfield partner Paul Scholes. -
to be truthful no idea what is really the hype on hagreaves.. but maybe cos i haven't really seen him in action.. he impressed me during WC though but from the performances that I have seen him so far, 17m is a funny price..

ah well, i think Hargreaves will be a great addition to the squad because we'v been seriously lacking in a true holding midfielder since Keano left.
