Sir Alex expects exciting tie
Sir Alex Ferguson expects SundayÂ’s Community Shield at Wembley to produce a far more entertaining tie than the disappointing FA Cup final played out between the two teams in May.
An exhausting season and a poor pitch were cited as reasons for a less than spectacular first cup final at the new Wembley, which saw Chelsea nick a win in extra time through Didier Drogba, but the United boss is confident of a more exciting battle this time around.
"I think it will be a better game,” said the boss. “There was tiredness in both teams in the cup final. I know that I couldn't get any more out of my players. They'd done a fantastic job for us, virtually the same players every week from the beginning of April.
“But the other thing was that the pitch was a bit dead. Being a new pitch, that was a problem. There had been a lot of rain during the week and then the sun came at the weekend and it just deadened the pitch. The speed of it wasn't great. I know the groundsman and he'll work to make sure it's a good pitch eventually. Sometimes it takes time to settle down. If it's a better pitch then it'll be a better game.”
The match is seen by some as a marker for the new campaign as United look to defend the Premier League crown and Chelsea look to reclaim it. But Sir Alex wonÂ’t be placing great store in the result.
"Over the years we've come up against the team that has been second to us on many occasions,” he said. “Arsenal, two or three times. It's always difficult to assess how important it is because a lot of times we use it as a stepping stone to the first game of the season for the players that need the game. That is the way we have always viewed it.
"It will be a competitive game. Even though I said we've used it as a stepping stone in the past, it's always been competitive. I don't think you can avoid that. When you're playing against a team that are going to be competing against you for top honours, it can only be competitive. It will be that way on Sunday.”
And the boss is now champing at the bit to get the season started. “I think you just want to get into it,” he added. “I've had too many of them to get excited about it. You tend to think, 'let's get started'. But you've got to have the right preparation. That's essential, and hopefully our preparation is right.” -

I hope it'll be an entertaining match unlike last season's FA Cup Final where both sides adopt the kiasu/kiasi mentality and field one striker while the others are all behind the ball defending.

Skysports mentioned that there will be the 'usual-look' in the line-up; so perhaps no likes of Owen, Tevez, Nani or Anderson?

Nani most probably on the bench.
Anderson's got a slight hamstring injury, Tevez(has he officially signed yet?) has no match practice and Hargo said he's targeting Reading as his first competitive match. -

the penalties were well taken. its just luck that he saved them.

Hargreaves is wearing 23!
Van der Sar is godlike in penalty shootout man. All the saves he made were top-notch. I hope he maintains this form for the next season or Foster will be taking over.

to be honest i feared the worst when i saw cech doing his rountine and VDS drinking water.
he is on fire today man.
