He is promoted to a 4 star general.
Prince Charles received an extra treat for his 58th birthday on Tuesday with a promotion to four-star rank in all three services of the military.
Charles, due to celebrate his birthday privately on Tuesday evening with his wife, the Duchess of Cornwall, will now be a navy admiral, an army general and an air chief marshal, the Ministry of Defence said.
"We are promoting him to keep him in step with individuals who are his peers in the armed forces," a defence ministry spokesman told Reuters.
Charles had only a short active military career that ended 30 years ago.
He joined the Royal Air Force in March 1971. Later that year the prince moved to the Navy, following in the footsteps of his father, grandfather and both great-grandfathers.
In February 1976, Charles took command of the coastal minehunter, HMS Bronington, for his last nine months.
Charles was made a navy captain and RAF group captain for his 40th birthday, given two-star rank for his 50th and was last promoted four years ago, the Guardian reported.
His sons Princes William and Harry are both in the Army. -
Btw, few days prior to his birthday... he did something unprotocol!! The Queen is not happy abt it either...
Britain's Prince Charles drew disapproving glares from the Queen when he seemed to drop off to sleep at an Armistice Day tribute.
As his eyes closed and his head slumped on to his chest, the Queen certainly appeared to suspect her eldest son had nodded off and gave him a stern stare.
Seconds later the prince roused himself and studied his programme. He and wife Camilla had joined other royals, Tony Blair and dignitaries at the poppy day gathering in London's Hyde Park, one of hundreds such events held around Britain.
"I was surprised when I saw the prince, he looked asleep during New Zealand premier Helen Clark's speech," photographer Simon Jones was quoted by the Newsoftheworld, as saying.
"You wouldn't expect it at an event like this," he added.
