The Red Devils’ boss Sir Alex Ferguson has admitted that he failed to land an unspecified player in January, but hoped to sign his man in the summer.
Now The Mirror reports that the Villa player was one United were unable to sign during the winter transfer window, and it is now believed that Ferguson will return with an offer for the England international once the curtain comes down on the current season.
Young scored his country’s second in Wednesday’s international friendly against Denmark, resulting in a 2-1 victory for the Three Lions, and Villa boss Gerard Houllier has also admitted that clubs are “sniffing around” for his prized asset.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been tracking Aston Villa winger Ashley Young for what seems like an eternity and it seems that the Manchester United boss will try his hardest to land the England international this summer as the Old Trafford boss looks to bring in relatively youthful additions to his slightly creaky squad.
The 25 year old former Watford man has resisted calls to sign a new Villa Park contract and has stated that he will only enter talks in the summer, by which time the talented wide man will have just one year left on his current deal, something Gerard Houllier will not be happy about.
Aston Villa have begun to develop a reputation as a team who’s stars have a tendency to jump ship for ‘bigger’ club as evidenced by the departures of Gareth Barry and James Milner in recent years and the Midlands club will surely be concerned by Young’s stance on signing a new deal.
Manchester United are reportedly considering something of a clear out with the likes of Wes Brown, Michael Owen, Anderson, Michael Carrick, Darron Gibson and Tomasz Kuszczak all either coming to their end of their current contracts or reportedly set to be offloaded.
