Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich wants to replace Carlo Ancelotti with Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola.
The Sunday Mirror says Ancelotti faces dismissal after his team failed to beat Manchester United to secure qualification for the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Abramovich, has finally run out of patience with the Italian boss. Chelsea sources close to the Russian billionaire believe Guardiola, the Barcelona coach, has emerged as their club’s prime target to replace Ancelotti.
Guardiola recently signed a 12-month extension to remain in Spain next season. But that will not deter Abramovich from making a formal approach for his services if the Catalan coach encourages a move to England.
Abramovich will also take comfort from the fact that Guardiola openly admits his time at Barcelona is drawing to a close.
Guardiola said recently: “I think my time is ending here in Barcelona. I’m fine here, but when you’re at a club like this you cannot stay for too long.
“Next year will be the fourth consecutive season as coach of Barcelona.
“Such a club must have a lot of courage to take a coach for so long, because the players get tired of coaches and vice-versa.”
