Kevin Nolan's first-half volley earned Bolton a first away league win since December 2005 as Portsmouth missed out on top spot in the Premiership.
Pompey were struggling to break down Bolton's rock-solid defence and instead took to shooting outside the area, with Glen Johnson rifling fractionally wide from 25 yards.
A flurry of late corners created some pressure and Nolan in particular made several brave blocks as Bolton held on for a gutsy three points.

Harry Redknapp could not fault his players for effort despite Portsmouth losing their first game of the season in a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Bolton.
Bolton withstood substantial pressure as the game wore on but despite having a number of chances Pompey were unable to pull level.
Following the defeat Redknapp praised his players for their unstinting effort and was philosophical about their first defeat of the season.
"It was difficult, we played ever so well and their keeper was in fantastic form"
The man who was death

GARY OÂ’NEIL reckons losing to Bolton was a reminder Portsmouth are not yet ready to join the Premiership elite.
Pompey midfielder OÂ’Neil, 23, insists fans were getting over-excited by their stay at the top of the Premiership before MondayÂ’s 1-0 home defeat.
He said: “Nobody in our squad expected us to make the start we have. It is easy to get carried away.
“We’ve only played six games and there are a lot of points to be won.
“We’re not thinking about Europe next season and this defeat by Bolton could be a reality check for us.
