Veteran Dutch keeper Ronald Waterreus looks likely to be the answer to Newcastle United's goalkeeping dilemma.
Magpies boss Glenn Roeder is keen to bring in short-term cover after number one Shay Given required an operation on a stomach injury.
The 36-year-old was released by Rangers at the end of last season and has yet to fix himself up with a new club.
That would suit Newcastle perfectly as Roeder is only looking to sign a keeper to take him up to the New Year by which time Given should be back in the side.

You are right man... so many years and you would have thought they will get themselves 2 decent central defenders liao. But until today still don't really see one good defender in their squad.
I still remember their Jean-Alain Boumsong guy... oh man this fellow, what to say... i seen him make so many mistakes during the time he was there. Lucky he is gone now.
But unfortunately, they still have Titus Bramble and Bernard, these 2 also not solid defenders...
Newcastle will need better defenders if they want to try for top 8 spot.
