Man Utd to play a stronger side against Southend
Manchester United manager Alex Ferguson will strengthen his League Cup side to face Southend in the fourth round on Tuesday after the holders risked an embarrassing exit against Crewe Alexandra. Uniteds re-shuffled side were just a minute away from a penalty shootout at third-division Crewe in last months third round, before substitute Kieran Lee snatched a 2-1 victory in extra time.
"We had a nice wee reminder a couple of weeks ago at Crewe that football is always there to knock you down," Ferguson was quoted as saying on Uniteds Web site on Monday.
"We dont want another Crewe experience on Tuesday night so Ill be taking a stronger team to Southend. Although Ive got a couple of nice young players in the reserves they are definitely too young for this situation. "Cup games have that sudden-death thrust about them and you can be knocked out in a second."
His Premier League leaders take on a Southend side who are bottom of the second division after suffering a fourth consecutive league defeat, going down 3-1 to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday. Ferguson was determined to look ahead and shrugged off the 20-year milestone he reached on Monday as Uniteds manager, having amassed 25 trophies.
"People are going on about my 20 years here and what we have achieved but that doesnt matter to me, to be honest," he said. "The future is always the most important thing. I dont think Ive watched a single video of any of the trophies that Ive won apart from the European Cup Winners Cup victory over Real Madrid with Aberdeen (in the 1983 final). Ive watched that a few times. But apart from that and a few snatches of the game in Barcelona when we beat Bayern Munich (in the 1999 Champions League final), I dont tend to look back, I always move forward." -
Charlton not resting players for Carling Cup match
Charlton boss Iain Dowie is determined not to become battling Chesterfields third successive Barclays Premiership scalp in the Carling Cup. Coca-Cola League One strugglers Chesterfield, beaten by two stoppage-time Gillingham goals on Saturday, have already knocked out Manchester City and West Ham.
Charlton, still at the foot of the top flight despite keeping a fourth consecutive clean sheet in their win over City on Saturday, go to Saltergate with Dowie insisting: "If we can match their heart and soul we can go through."
He added: "I know they have taken some big scalps already and are a well-disciplined, well-organised side - just like their manager Roy McFarland was as a player. But we are in good heart after our recent run - and if we go there with the right attitude and spirit we will be all right."
Dowie will not be resting key players. "It will be a very competitive game, but this competition is not a distraction from our league fight," he said. "Im not going to start mixing the changes around too much, because thats one of the best ways to get knocked out - and we dont want to do that. We want to reach the later stages of this competition at least, and Im going for it in a very forthright fashion."
Dowie left out Darren Bent for the last round against Bolton when the striker was nursing a hamstring strain - and on-loan goalkeeper Scott Carson has not played at all yet in the competition for Charlton. But the indications are that both key men will face Chesterfield, reserve goalkeeper Thomas Myhre still ruled out with an ankle injury and winger Dennis Rommedahl sidelined by a groin strain which forced his substitution on Saturday.
Midfielder Matt Holland is another doubt - having played the entire second half with blurred vision after a knock in the eye at the weekend - while centre-half Talal El Karkouri is struggling with a hamstring strain and Jonathan Fortune may step in. -
Hyypia warns Liverpool that Birmingham will be fired up
Defender Sami Hyypia has warned his Liverpool colleagues that they will be facing a fired-up Birmingham searching for revenge when the sides clash in the Carling Cup this week. Hyypia was part of a Liverpool team who cruelly humiliated Birmingham in February, dishing out a 7-0 hammering at St Andrews in the FA Cup quarter-finals. It was an embarrassing night for Steve Bruce and his team and at the time threatened his job.
He has found his job under threat again this season so Birmingham will want to get their own back on Liverpool, whose away form in all competitions this season makes them likely candidates to become victims of a giant-killing. Hyypia has warned of what he expects this time around from Birmingham on Wednesday.
He said: "The Birmingham lads who played in that cup tie last season and had to suffer that 7-0 defeat will remember the match and they will be really up for it this time around. Theyll be ready for the fight and Steve Bruce will tell them to be more awake than they were last time, when we scored two very quickly. I guess Steve Bruce will be trying everything he can to make sure that doesnt happen again."
Hyypia added: "Maybe there was some luck in us scoring two so quickly, but we were up for the game and we decided to start very quickly and we got the reward. The whole 90 minutes from then on for us was very good, we scored some excellent goals and never let Birmingham into it. But this Carling Cup tie is a totally different game and they will want to make up for last season as well as to progress in the tournament themselves, we know it will be a lot tougher this time around."
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez will probably rotate his side again with Sundays tough trip to Arsenal on the horizon. He could well bring back Craig Bellamy, who is now in full training after missing three games with an ankle injury. Benitez could also include Robbie Fowler up front with one eye on resting Dirk Kuyt and Peter Crouch for the weekend game at the Emirates Stadium. Benitez is well aware that Liverpools away record must improve, and quickly.
He said: "We must do better. After three months of the season we do not want people to keep talking about us not winning away, they do not look at chances missed just the points we do not have. We need to score and win. We must do better away from home, we know that. We have Birmingham in the Carling Cup this week, then Arsenal in the league. But we have more confidence now after our four victories at home." -
