Newcastle striker Shola Ameobi looks set to miss the rest of the season with a hip injury. The forward has been troubled by the injury for some time, and in an effort to cure the problem he is being sent to America for specialist surgery.
Ameobi has scored five goals this season, and had been given more responsibility up front following Michael Owen's injury and Alan Shearer's retirement.
Roeder said: "Shola's hip has all but seized up and he will be going to America for his operation, but this is easier said than done because the specialist is so good that all the top sports stars in the States who have this sort of problem are queuing up to see him.
"Shola has been scoring in every other game since I took over in February and this shows just how important he has been to us, and he will be a big miss.
"We were completely ineffective in the last third of the field on Saturday (against Sheffield United) and we didn't really create a chance."
Newcastle are now extremely light on striking options, espeicially after Giuseppe Rossi and Antoine Sibierski picked up knocks in the Carling Cup clash against Watford.
