On a night when Liverpool could have reached the top four, all they managed was a scoreless draw with Portsmouth which took them ahead of local rivals Everton in the Barclays Premiership table.
Pompey's massed ranks survived a near-constant bombardment to claim a precious draw - a tremendous reward for a club who had not won at Anfield for 55 years.
Pompey unashamedly time-wasted and wore Liverpool down. Steven Gerrard tried to be the one-man hero, but not even his Captain Marvel act could rescue anything for Liverpool in this one.
Jamie Carragher got the nod as Steven Gerrard's emergency central midfield partner, a situation caused by injuries to Xabi Alonso, Mohamed Sissoko and now Bolo Zenden.
Such was Liverpool's depleted squad that youngster Danny Guthrie was named on the bench, having previously only played in the Carling Cup while Moroccan forward Nabil El Zhar was involved as a substitute for the first time. -
Benitez hits out at 'time-wasting'
Craig Bellamy was unavailable due to the late conclusion of his court case in Cardiff where he had been found not guilty on two assault charges earlier in the day.
Portsmouth included Matt Taylor, despite a back problem, while Benjani Mwaruwari was passed fit at the last minute with a knee injury.
Carragher took his new duties to heart by surging forward after just two minutes to lash a 20-yard shot just wide.
Sami Hyypia's long ball then gave Peter Crouch the opportunity to test David James from a similar distance.
Luis Garcia twice, John Arne Riise and then Hyypia - from 25 yards - all produced efforts that went close as Liverpool moved the ball at speed through the Pompey ranks.
But although Liverpool had a vast amount of the possession, they were not getting into dangerous positions through the middle where Sol Campbell and Linvoy Primus looked composed.
Liverpool's long-range barrage continued when Gerrard saw a dipping 25-yard free-kick just clear James' bar. Pompey got in just a first shot of the night - a 25-yard free-kick from Matt Taylor that flew well wide.
Gerrard did his best to break the deadlock with an angled 12-yard effort just wide before Luis Garcia sent in a flicked header into the side-netting.
But it was a frustrating half for Liverpool who never really got close enough to James to have a decent inspection of their former colleague's new haircut.
After the break, Gerrard continued to provide almost all of Liverpool's attacking threat, and an edge-of-the-box piledriver hit Campbell's elbow and deflected into James' arms. Penalty appeals were waved away by referee Alan Wiley.
Carragher was booked for tugging back Pedro Mendes before Jermaine Pennant sent Gerrard away on the right, his low cross causing trouble for James who was forced to make two saves in quick succession from Luis Garcia.
Pompey were getting more adventurous and Taylor saw a 25-yard shot crash into Riise on the edge of the box before Liverpool sent on Robbie Fowler on the hour for Crouch to try to add some variation.
Gerrard by now was attempting to be everywhere - providing the long balls from the back, breaking up attacks in midfield and trying to get into the box as well.
Pennant got himself booked after a series of altercations with referee Wiley before Pompey sent on Manuel Fernandes for the injured Mendes.
Liverpool then gave El Zhar his debut in place of Luis Garcia on 72 minutes.
With eight minutes left Pompey sent on Kanu for Benjani Mwaruwari, Guthrie making his Liverpool league debut in place of Pennant on 84 minutes.
Two minutes from time Gerrard hurled himself at a Dirk Kuyt cross in sheer desperation, the ball flashing into the side netting. Referee Wiley booked Noe Pamarot for time wasting and allowed five minutes added time.
In that spell Campbell had to go off with a split boot and, as Pompey staff searched for a replacement they were on the brink of sending on Andy O'Brien before a spare boot was found for Campbell. That bout of comedy just about summed up Liverpool's night. -
Aston Villa 1-3 Man City: Blues break their jinx
Manchester City finally achieved their first away win of the season in the Barclays Premiership with a 3-1 victory at Aston Villa.
Former Villa striker Darius Vassell, Joey Barton and Sylvain Distin were on target for Stuart Pearce's side.
Vassell was booed by the home fans every time he touched the ball but he threatened after a surging run forward only for Gavin McCann to halt his progress with a well-timed tackle.
Stuart Taylor, deputising for the injured Thomas Sorensen, made the first save of note to beat out a fierce drive from Georgios Samaras after he had exchanged passes with Bernardo Corradi.
Taylor was called upon again to turn a curling Vassell shot around the post.
Then after 18 minutes Vassell put the visitors ahead with his fifth goal in four games against Villa since his #2million move in the summer of 2005.
A cross from Hatem Trabelsi was flicked on by Corradi and Vassell had the time and space at the far post to beat Taylor with a low left-footed drive for his first goal of the campaign.
It came as no surprise when City struck again in the 32nd minute through Barton's fourth league goal of the campaign.
Distin's long crossfield pass was chased down by Samaras who was played onside by Liam Ridgewell.
He managed to keep the ball in play by the by-line and had time to pick out the run of Barton whose first-time shot beat Taylor inside the near post.
Stiliyan Petrov's free-kick beat Nicky Weaver but crashed against the crossbar and bounced down on the goal-line.
Then after 66 minutes Gavin McCann gave Villa a lifeline with his first goal this season with a 25-yard shot.
With 15 minutes remaining a superb goal from Distin settled the issue in favour of City. -
Fulham 2-1 Arsenal: Gunners hopes shredded
Arsene Wenger may just have to face his own 'moment of truth' after a 2-1 defeat at Fulham all but ended Arsenal's hopes of forcing their way into the Barclays Premiership title race.
The Gunners boss had admitted his team were entering a crucial phase of the campaign, both domestically and in Europe.
With little margin for error following the weekend loss at Bolton, this 2-1 reverse at Craven Cottage looks set to prove fatal.
The decision to rest several first-team regulars - with one eye on both Saturday's north-London derby against Tottenham and next week's Champions League trip to Porto - proved unwise as Fulham rose to the challenge.
An early goal from Brian McBride set the tone for the evening, before Tomas Radzinski swept in a second from close range.
Although Robin van Persie reduced the deficit before half-time with a brilliant 30-yard free-kick, even the introduction of Theo Walcott could not save Arsenal - who finished the game with 10 men following Philippe Senderos' dismissal for a second yellow card.
From Claus Jensen's left-wing corner, McBride got ahead of his markers to meet the ball at the near post, flick it backwards up over Jens Lehmann and past Mathieu Flamini on the line.
Captain Thierry Henry, fit again following a neck problem, looked menacing again down the left, as he cut inside before drilling an angled strike over the bar.
Captain Luis Boa Morte tricked his way past Alexander Song with a sublime backheel before dashing to the by-line and pulling the ball across goal.
Tomasz Radzinski arrived just in time at the far post ahead of Flamini to double Fulham's lead with a tap-in on 19 minutes - but then needed treatment after his momentum took the Canadian into the advertising hoardings.
It should have been 3-0 and game over just after the half hour when Boa Morte dashed clear of the Arsenal defence, with more than a suspicion of offside.
Arsenal went up the other end and pulled a goal back nine minutes before the break through a stunning free-kick from van Persie.
Liam Rosenior upended Alexander Hleb, and was booked for his troubles.
The young Dutchman lined up behind the dead ball - a full 30 yards from goal slightly right of centre.
There was only ever one thing on his mind, as van Persie promptly curled a quite breathtaking left-foot effort around the wall and into the far corner, past the diving Antti Niemi.
Jensen was just off target with his chance from a free-kick as the match became somewhat scrappy.
McBride forced another good stop from Lehmann, this time at his near post, as the hosts finished the half on top.
Wenger called for Cesc Fabregas at the restart, with Song taken off - and the Gunners looked lively.
Henry thought he had levelled after collecting a trademark cross-field pass and driving an angled shot past Niemi from the left. However, the assistant's flag had already been raised in what looked a marginal call at best.
Tomas Rosicky was given a rest, with England starlet Walcott set to inject some pace down the Arsenal right.
On 63 minutes, the visitors were reduced to 10 men when centre-half Senderos, who had already been booked, received a second yellow card for a clumsy challenge on Boa Morte, just outside the penalty area.
The Fulham captain was within inches of restoring his side's two-goal advantage - but the free-kick rattled back off the crossbar with Lehmann rooted to the spot.
Arsenal had to take risks now, and continually left themselves open on the quick counter attack.
However, the visitors almost snatched an equaliser when Walcott's first-time shot from the edge of the Fulham penalty area struck the outside base of the far post as the Gunners rallied.
Tempers were close to boiling point in the closing stages, Flamini and McBride both cautioned for their part in a touchline tussle.
Henry nearly connected with Walcott's low centre, as the Gunners were left to reflect on what might have been as their title dreams faded - a result which no doubt would have been greeted with just as much jubilation a few miles down the Fulham Road. -
Man Utd 3-0 Everton: United ring the changes
Much-changed Manchester United took another stuttering step forward in their bid to land the Barclays Premiership title but the manner of their 3-0 win over Everton left lingering question marks over the depth of Sir Alex Ferguson's squad.
Cristiano Ronaldo put the Red Devils in front before the break, before Patrice Evra, with his first for the club, and John O'Shea netted to maintain a three-point lead over Chelsea.
But the decisive scoreline could not mask the lacklustre nature of some of United's play and the imbalance in Ferguson's side at the final whistle only emphasised the desperate requirement for striking reinforcements in the January transfer window.
Fortunately, Ronaldo had identified himself as a man the Toffeemen needed to stick to, skimming one long range effort wide before uncharacteristically ballooning a free-kick so high it almost ended up in the second tier of the East Stand.
Rooney was not quite the same threat, although he was just off target with one header before Ronaldo finally broke the deadlock.
In keeping with the contest, it was a single moment of excellence rather than any sustained brilliance which brought the Portugal international his fifth goal of the season.
Having set up Michael Carrick in the first place, Ronaldo was then on hand when the midfielder's shot cannoned back off Nuno Valente, lashing a first-time effort into the corner of Richard Wright's goal.
Given his first start of the season because of the Premier League rules that prevented on-loan Tim Howard appearing against his own club, Wright enjoyed better luck when he kept out a Rooney shot that was heading towards the bottom corner just before half-time.
By then though, Everton should have been level but James Beattie inexplicably failed to control when completely free inside the United box.
Having been somewhat subdued by his own high standards during the opening period, Rooney was at the centre of everything at the start of the second.
Rooney's next involvement with a Neville saw him beating the ground in anger at referee Mark Halsey's failure to punish Phil's forceful tackle with a free-kick.
The 21-year-old was still seething when Evra was booked for bringing down Mikel Arteta and quickly jogged over to offer his thoughts.
His presence brought an instant reaction from the Everton fans. Rooney's response to the predictable abuse was to turn in their direction and kiss the badge on his red United shirt.
It duly arrived after 62 minutes when Evra sprang the Everton offside trap, racing onto Rooney's lay-off before drilling his first Red Devils goal through Wright's legs.
The goal killed Everton off long before O'Shea's audacious flick brought United their third.
But the sight of Rio Ferdinand limping towards the tunnel after the final whistle, coupled with the knowledge Wes Brown and Evra had finished the game in midfield, will do little to dispel genuine fears about United's ability to keep their noses in front of Chelsea until next spring -
Ferguson rests weary Giggs
Not that Ferguson will be too bothered, getting the victory he wanted - in a fixture United have not won for the past two seasons - after being able to give some of his key men a rest ahead of Saturday's trip to Middlesbrough and next week's make-or-break Champions League encounter with Benfica.
With the Neville brothers lining up as opposing captains, Wayne Rooney playing against his old club for the first time since Everton manager David Moyes launched legal proceedings against the striker and Ferguson's numerous changes, there were plenty of sub-plots.
One more emerged in the build-up to kick-off as rumours circulated of a bust-up between Ryan Giggs and Ferguson, which was said to have been triggered by the Welshman's contribution to Chelsea's equaliser at Old Trafford on Sunday.
That Giggs did not even get to celebrate his 33rd birthday on the bench only fuelled the gossip, until that is, he emerged in the directors' box, laughing and joking, showing no sign of a recent hairdryer blast.
There was not too much for Giggs to giggle about in the opening stages as United struggled to impose themselves on the contest -
Bolton 0-1 Chelsea: Ballack breaks Bolton
Jose Mourinho may not enjoy facing Bolton but he does like the Reebok Stadium as the Chelsea manager saw his team keep the pressure on Manchester United at the top of the table with a narrow 1-0 win.
A goal from Michael Ballack was enough to seal victory on the ground where the Blues boss celebrated his first Barclays Premiership title two years ago.
However, Chelsea were grateful to goalkeeper Carlo Cudicini who made a crucial block from El-Hadji Diouf in stoppage time.
Chelsea were anxious not to go down the same road as Arsenal, who were beaten on this ground four days ago.
Mourinho's side dominated the game for long periods after a scare or two in the opening stages in front of an expectant home crowd.
Chelsea were guilty of slack marking in the second minute when Kevin Davies ghosted in at the far post after Nicky Hunt clipped the ball forward.
However the Bolton striker seemed to be taken by surprise at the chance and headed wide.
Chelsea responded in the 14th minute after Claude Makelele released Frank Lampard.
He thumped in a shot from 25 yards but goalkeeper Jussi Jaaskelainen got his body behind the England midfielder's effort.
Chelsea stepped up the pace and Didier Drogba skipped away from Abdoulaye Meite four minutes later only for his cross to be deflected to safety.
There was another scare for Bolton in the 19th minute when Lampard rattled in a free-kick that Jaaskelainen parried to safety.
Then the Finnish goalkeeper did well to block Drogba's effort from an acute angle before Carvalho saw his effort come back off the post.
Bolton were under siege and Michael Essien fired a shot over the bar in the 23rd minute.
Bolton had a brief respite and a corner from Diouf was punched away by Cudicini.
They finally caved in first-half stoppage time after Jaaskelainen tipped over a thunderbolt from Andriy Shevchenko.
Ballack peeled away from Davies as Lampard delivered the corner and headed home at the near post to make the breakthrough.
Bolton were furious at the amount of time added on and Faye was booked for dissent.
One thing, though, they cannot be faulted for is their fighting spirit.
Tal Ben Haim strode forward in the 47th minute and sent in a shot from distance that went narrowly wide of the post.
That stung the visitors and Lampard cracked in a 30-yard shot but Jaaskelainen was equal to it.
Bolton were making a decent fist of it, though, and a free-kick from Campo in the 52nd minute tested Cudicini.
Nicolas Anelka, the two-goal hero of the victory against Arsenal, was having a quiet game.
Chelsea were hardly in the comfort zone and Geremi got into a good position nine minutes later only for his cross to find the goalkeeper's arms.
Davies had put in a solid shift and was replaced by Ricardo Vaz Te in the 76th minute.
Shevchenko was taken off a minute later after failing to improve on his three-goal tally in the league and replaced by Solomon Kalou.
Bolton almost drew level in the 78th minute but Cudicini made a good block from Diouf's half-volley.
Chelsea hit back and Drogba twice came close in quick succession.
The striker's first effort just cleared the bar in the 82nd minute, then he could not get enough power on his shot from close range.
Then Cudicini came to the rescue and Chelsea secured a welcome victory at one of the league's fortresses -
Mourinho aiming high
Mourinho told Sky Sports 2: 'It was a good period for us to come here and (to) Manchester and go home with the same distance (three points) is very positive.
'We are not top of the league. We want to be there all the time but we had two very difficult matches.
'If you do it wrong you can leave Old Trafford with six points (deficit) and Bolton maybe nine points.
'I don't think we will take a lot of time to be top of the league.
'If you tell me when we play at home it is three points (difference), I would not be very sad because it would be all in our hands.
'Now is our time to turn things round. I like to be first but I am very happy with this situation.'
The Blues manager described his players as 'heroes' after withstanding constant Bolton pressure in the second half.
He said: 'In the first half we played amazingly well.
'I don't remember Bolton even touching our box and the goal in the last few seconds was more than justice.
'In the second half they put pressure on us and played very well and we defended very well.
'We had in every player a fighter because we had to fight for every ball. It is difficult to play against them.
'I think we fought like heroes. We fought to deserve this victory.'
Opposite number Sam Allardyce bemoaned his side's inability to take their chances and believed the Trotters had performed well enough in the second half to deserve a point.
'They are very good at it (set pieces) and that's the difference in terms of the result,' Allardyce told Sky Sports.
'In open play we limited them to shots outside the box. But right on the very stroke of half-time on a corner was very disappointing but I have to praise the players for the way they approached the second half.
'Unfortunately our finishing has let us down.
'Certainly on second-half performance I think we deserved a point.' -
Premiership: United stay three points clear
There were no slip-ups from Manchester United or Chelsea tonight as the three-point gap at the top of the Premiership remained intact.
Leaders United fielded a depleted line-up at home to Everton but ran out comfortable 3-0 winner thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo, a first in English football from Patrice Evra and John O'Shea.
Playing alongside Wayne Rooney in attack, Ronaldo gave United the lead when he fired home on the rebound from 25 yards after Michael Carrick's shot had been blocked by Nuno Valente.
Patrice Evra sealed the points after bursting on to a Rooney ball before blasting it through Richard Wright's legs.
The French full-back then turned provider to put the ball on a plate for O'Shea.
Champions Chelsea maintained their impressive recent record at Bolton with a 1-0 victory at the Reebok Stadium.
The Blues dominated the first half but had to wait until deep in to stoppage-time to take the lead, Kevin Davies allowing Michael Ballack to get in front of him and head home Frank Lampard's corner.
Arsenal's woes continued with a second straight defeat as they lost to London rivals Fulham for the first time in more than 40 years.
The Cottagers had earned just one point from 10 Premiership meetings with the Gunners so will savour their 2-1 success.
They took a sixth-minute lead when Jens Lehmann failed to get a strong enough hand to Brian McBride's header from a Claus Jensen corner.
Tomas Radzinski doubled the home side's advantage when he beat Mathieu Flamini to a Luis Boa Morte cross but a spectacular 30-yard free-kick from Robin van Persie got Arsenal back into the game nine minutes before the break.
Thierry Henry was controversially adjudged offside when he curled in a typical finish shortly after the restart but Arsenal then lost Philippe Senderos to a second yellow card.
Aston Villa were beaten at home for the first time under Martin O'Neill as bogey side Manchester City broke their away duck with a 3-1 win at Villa Park.
Stuart Pearce's men had not tasted success on the road since winning on the same ground in April but former Villa striker Darius Vassell lashed in Micah Richards' cross and Joey Barton swept home Georgios Samaras' cutback to put them firmly in charge.
Villa finally awoke and Stiliyan Petrov's free-kick was deemed not to have crossed the line after bouncing down off the crossbar.
A brilliant 25-yard drive from Gavin McCann cut the deficit with 25 minutes remaining but Sylvain Distin showed the touch and finish of a striker with a brilliant breakaway goal, his first for 19 months.
In the night's other game, Liverpool failed to score at Anfield for the first time this season after failing to break down a resolute Portsmouth, who move up to third.

Fulham 2-1 Arsenal
Fulham claimed their first win over Arsenal in 40 years as the visitors never recovered from a nightmare start.
Brian McBride's header and a tap-in by Tomasz Radzinski put Fulham ahead, with Robin van Persie's free-kick being Arsenal's only first-half plus point.
In a thrilling second half, Philippe Senderos was sent off and Luis Boa Morte and Theo Walcott hit the woodwork at either end.
Jens Lehmann ended the match in attack but Fulham held on for a famous win.
Fulham manager Chris Coleman:
"At half time we said we can't sit back, we have to ask more questions andd take the game to them. Over the 90 minutes we deserved it.
"Arsenal are at their best when the opposition attack so we said when we do make sure we're tight at the back.
"You need a bit of luck against Arsenal and if we've had it then we earned it."
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger:
"The game was played at a high pace, I can't fault the team but it's difficult when you're 2-0 down early on.
"We're playing many games at the moment but the team showed great spirit and reactions, we fought until the end but it just doesn't seem to be going for us at the moment.
"Of course we are down and disappointed, but it's part of your job to cope with that - if you want to play at the top level, sometimes it doesn't got your way.
"We have character and we will respond, don't worry."

Manchester United maintained their three-point lead at the Premiership summit with a comfortable win.
Sir Alex Ferguson's much-changed side struggled to find rhythm early on, but Cristiano Ronaldo broke the deadlock with a 20-yard finish after 39 minutes.
Everton had no cutting edge and Patrice Evra scored his first goal for United from a tight angle after 63 minutes.
Substitute John O'Shea wrapped up the win with a flicked finish from Evra's cross two minutes from time.
United made five changes from the side that drew against Chelsea, with Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes, Nemanja Vidic and Louis Saha all left out.
