The fog had earlier caused problems for Arsenal with their plane having to be diverted to Blackpool airport because of conditions in Liverpool.
Many fans were also stuck in traffic, backed-up because of the fog, and would have struggled to have made the 7.45pm kick-off.

Anfield stadium manager Ged Poynton expects Liverpool's Carling Cup quarter final against Arsenal to be rescheduled for January 9 or 10.
Tuesday's clash was postponed due to fog and the authorities now have the headache of arranging a new date as quickly as possible.
The semi-finals are set to take place on January 9 and 10, but Poynton believes that will be the earliest opportunity for the quarter final to be played as both sides are competing twice a week in the Premiership over the festive period.
"We'll discuss this with Arsenal and the football league and a date will have to be found but it is very difficult to be looking at a free midweek because I don't think you can cancel any league games," he told Sky Sports News.
"The only date, I think, is the ninth and tenth of January, which is the date for the next round, unless there is a cancellation."
Arsene Wenger questioned why the game could not simply be put back 24 hours until Wednesday, but Poynton has insisted that would not have been allowed.
"You need ten days' notice at least to inform Merseyside police," he explained.
"There's also the traffic management and so on, and if you think about some of the laws of the city, then we have it written that there has to be ten days notice minimum for a football match to be staged at Anfield."

Rafa Benitez and Arsene Wenger both disagreed with referee Martin Atkinson's decision after Liverpool's Carling Cup quarter final with Arsenal was postponed due to fog.
Atkinson took the decision to call off the game an hour before kick-off as he had safety concerns in the poor conditions.
Benitez voiced his surprise as he felt the visibility was not too bad and improving all the time.
"I was surprised because this morning we were training in worse conditions, and when we arrived it was much worse than now," he told Sky Sports.
"Now it is much better and you can see from one goal to the other goal.
"But you cannot change the decision. We must respect it but we don't agree."
Wenger also felt that the game should have gone ahead, or that putting it back until Wednesday would have been another viable option.
"Both teams wanted to play. We offered to start the game and, if it was impossible, to stop the game," he explained.
"At the moment, to me, it looks playable, but the referee has made his mind up and we could not influence him in fairness.
"Benitez and myself tried to play but he thought it was too dangerous.
"We could have played tomorrow, even, but it is very difficult to reorganise in such a short time. I asked and everyone said it was impossible to rearrange it in 24 hours."
