MARTIN O'NEILL has called for the transfer window to be scrapped. The Aston Villa boss is expected to make a number of signings in the January sales.
But the Irishman wants to return to the old system when clubs could buy players at any point during the season until transfer deadline day in late March.
O'Neill said: "Do I like the transfer window? Not particularly. "I think what it does is point everyone into this supposed window of opportunity — and sometimes you are panicked into things.
"After January 31 a manager is not able to do anything until the end of the season. He has that in his mind. "Before the system was OK. I am not a fan of this one — and I am not sure many people are — but whilst it is in place you can't do anything about it.
"You are not going to change the transfer window this season. "But I am sure people will be lobbying to try and do something about it and hopefully that will be successful in the not too distant future." -

Toon warn Villa off Milner swoop
Newcastle boss Glenn Roeder has insisted winger James Milner is not for sale in the January transfer window.
The 20-year-old almost joined Aston Villa on the final day of the summer transfer window as the Magpies attempted to free up cash for their own late deals.
However, Roeder later admitted he was happy when Milner returned to Tyneside and has seen the former Leeds star put together an impressive run of form.
The £5million-rated England Under-21 international has been linked with Villa again.
Roeder said: "Everybody knows James Milner almost went to Aston Villa at the 11th hour in the last transfer window and there is a lot of talk, especially in the midlands, that that is where he will be going in January - but not as far as I and the chairman are concerned.
"We have played 30 games this season and James has been involved in just about all of them. "As a result, he is getting the one thing he always wanted - regular first-team football.
"And in any case, why should James Milner want to leave Newcastle United? -
