Call in the God squadTHE VATICAN is planning to clean up Italian football — by founding its own club.
In a country where the game is as big as religion, the proposal has won the backing of leading European officials. But it is unclear whether the team would be a domestic or international side as the Vatican City is a sovereign state.
Home games could also be a problem because the Vatican is the size of just five football pitches.
Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone, the Pope's No2 and an avid football fan, said: "I don't exclude the possibility that the Vatican could field a football team at the level of the most famous professional clubs."
Bertone insists the huge number of Brazilian religious students at the Vatican could be drafted in to create a divine side, which would play in yellow and white.
A UEFA spokesman said: "The Vatican is a sovereign state recognised by the United Nations and we would have no problem in accepting it as a member."
