LIVERPOOLÂ’S Xabi Alonso has slammed claims he tried to cheat to win a penalty in the 3-1 FA Cup third-round defeat to Arsenal.
The Spain international knocked the ball past Gilberto only to be caught by the BrazilianÂ’s two-footed lunge on 25 minutes. But instead of awarding a spot-kick, ref Steve Bennett booked the midfielder for diving.
Alonso, 25, fumed: “I felt the contact, that is for sure. People who watched it on TV said it was a clear penalty. “I fell down because of that contact. I was not cheating.”
Reds boss Rafa Benitez agreed and said: “It was a penalty. There was contact but it was not very clear. And if it is not clear then it should not be a yellow card.” -

PREVIEW-Arsenal seek second Liverpool cup win in a week
LONDON, Jan 8 (Reuters) - Arsenal will look to complete a rare Anfield cup double on Tuesday when they face Liverpool in a League Cup quarter-final three days after winning there in the third round of the FA Cup.
Liverpool are unbeaten at home in the league since October 2005 but, having lost to Benfica in the Champions League and now Arsenal they will want to avoid a cup hat-trick at "fortress Anfield" in a game rescheduled after being postponed due to fog before Christmas.
Both sides are likely to line up differently on Tuesday for a competition that is last on the list of wants. "The result will give us a mental strength. We will come back with a different team but we want to win the game," Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger said after Saturday's success.
Tomas Rosicky, who has struggled to impose himself at Arsenal since his summer arrival, scored twice on Saturday and could keep his place.
But captain Thierry Henry, who also scored on Saturday but missed all of December with injuries and mental exhaustion, is an unlikely starter.
"He is getting his legs back ... I think the break has benefited him because to play this kind of game ... you have to be fresh mentally as well," Wenger said. Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez will also ring the changes with an eye on the league game against Chelsea on Jan. 20.
Tuesday's winners will play Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals, which kick off on Wednesday when league champions Chelsea visit fourth-division Wycombe Wanderers. Wycombe have already knocked out Premier League Charlton Athletic but will find Chelsea even an under-strength Chelsea a different proposition. -

Rafa to stick with Dudek in goal
Rafael Benitez will continue with number two goalkeeper Jerzy Dudek for Tuesday's Carling Cup quarter-final clash against Arsenal at Anfield. Dudek was criticised after the 3-1 FA Cup defeat by the Gunners on Saturday, but Benitez aims to select the Pole again.
Benitez said: "Jerzy was promised at the beginning of the season that he would play in all cup ties.
"We will be sticking with that, he will play in the Carling Cup tie. Jerzy had a decent game in the first match, he didn't have much to do, just a couple of saves."
Benitez may well have utilised squad players for this match before the defeat on Saturday, but now he has hinted it will be a stronger side than he first planned.
The Spaniard said: "Maybe I will make a few changes from the team I originally had in my head for the match. We will have to see how the players are before picking the team, but it is more important to stay in the Carling Cup now."
He will consider recalling striker Craig Bellamy up front, while Sami Hyypia could return to the defence with Fabio Aurelio challenging for John Arne Riise's left-back spot.

BenÃtez pours all available resources into League Cup
Rafael BenÃtez has admitted he may have to scrap his initial plan to rest key personnel in tonight's Carling Cup quarter-final against Arsenal, with Liverpool's hopes of claiming domestic silverware this season effectively hinging upon progress in the competition.
The likes of Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher have been included in the squad for the fixture at Anfield, which was postponed last month because of fog, because the manager is aware that the league cup now represents his most viable route to a trophy this term. Liverpool are 14 points adrift of Manchester United in the Premiership, were eliminated from the FA Cup by Arsenal on Saturday and face a daunting tie against Barcelona in the knockout phase of the Champions League next month.
"I have an idea about the next game and the players that we could use," BenÃtez said. "We could say 'We can rest Gerrard' or 'We can rest Xabi Alonso' but maybe we have to have other possibilities. We also have to think about the Premier League and the Champions League but it's important to stay in this competition too. In some positions we can maybe use other players but the problems are always at right-back or in central midfield."
The Spaniard considers his squad to be thin in those areas, hence his pursuit of Lucas Neill and Javier Mascherano in the transfer window. He will include Jerzy Dudek in the starting line-up tonight, honouring his promise to play the Pole in cup games this season, but Liverpool will attempt to avenge Saturday's 3-1 defeat to Arsenal with what is in effect an experienced first-choice team.
BenÃtez remains painfully aware of the problems he has had against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester United since taking the reins at Anfield, with his record against the trio - six wins, including a Community Shield, and 14 defeats in their 24 meetings - an indication of the toils endured. -

Arsenal welcome back Cesc Fabregas, who was suspended for Saturday's FA Cup win against Liverpool at Anfield, and Abou Diaby returns after eight months out.
William Gallas could return after a thigh injury but Emmanuel Adebayor and Freddie Ljungberg are out.
