MADRID SHARE DERBY SPOILS
Gonzalo Higuain netted his first goal for the club as 10-man Real Madrid escaped from Saturday's local derby against Atletico with a point.
Atletico had taken a deserved early lead when captain Fernando Torres scored his first-ever competitive goal against Real.
However, it was not enough to guide hosts Atletico to victory, as winter signing Higuain slotted home his maiden Real goal just after the hour to earn his side a draw.
Visitors Real had to play the final eight minutes with a man less following the dismissal of Fabio Cannavaro, but Atletico could still not fashion a winner.
Javier Arizmendi scored the only goal as Deportivo La Coruna jumped three places to ninth in the Primera Liga with a narrow 1-0 victory at Real Sociedad.
The Spain international latched on to Gonzalez Sergio's cross shortly before the half-hour to maintain Depor's 2007 run that has seen them go unbeaten with six wins and five draws from their 11 league and cup games since the turn of the year.
The result is a major blow for Miguel Angel Lotina's Sociedad, who remain 11 points adrift of safety after a 14th defeat of the season. -

Stung by criticism following back-to-back defeats against Valencia and Liverpool, Barcelona produced their best performance in recent months as they dismantled a sorry looking Bilbao. Barca took the lead when Bilbao defender Fernando Amorebieta turned into his own net midway through the first half, midfielder Xavi made it 2-0 when he put the finishing touch to a gleaming passing move and Samuel Eto'o marked his return to the starting lineup with a cool finish before the break. - - - -
CELTA VIGO 2 RACING SANTANDER 2
Celta looked on course for a second home win of the season when a dubious penalty from Fernando Baiano and a fine header from new signing Habib Bamogo put them 2-0 up just after the half hour. But Racing pulled one back early in the second half when Pedro Munitis angled a shot into the far corner after good work from Serbian strike partner Nikola Zigic and earned themselves a point with a Cristian Alvarez penalty 11 minutes from time. - - - -
GETAFE 0 SEVILLA 0
Bernd Schuster's Getafe maintained their excellent defensive record at home this season thanks to another disciplined and determined display at the Coliseo. The Madrid-based side, who have conceded just three goals and lost only once at home this term, successfully shackled Primera Liga leading scorer Frederic Kanoute and then did the same with his replacement Ernesto Chevanton. - - - -

A last-gasp header by substitute Ruben Castro denied Valencia a victory that would have jacked up the pressure on the leaders. Winger Joaquin put Valencia in front with his first goal for the club when he poked home after keeper Albano Bizzarri had parried a Fernando Morientes shot into this path just after the hour, but Gimnastic refused to cave in and finally got their reward with Castro's injury-time strike. - - - -

Zaragoza missed the chance to leapfrog Atletico Madrid in the standings after they were held by an improving Levante who were reduced to 10 men when defender Inaki Descarga was sent off in injury time. - - - -
OSASUNA 0 ESPANYOL 2
Forward Ferran Corominas put in-form Espanyol in front when he fired an angled shot low into the far corner and leading striker Raul Tamudo secured a third win in a row when his deflected shot ballooned over keeper Ricardo at the near post midway through the second half. Espanyol had few problems holding on to their lead even though centre back Daniel Jarque was sent off with 14 minutes left to play. - - - -

A third goalless draw in a row for Luis Fernandez's Betis, but they have not lost in six and are slowly but surely hoisting themselves clear of the relegation zone. Recreativo, who were on the ropes for much of the second half, will be happy with a point that keeps them in the hunt for the European places. - - - -
VILLARREAL 2 REAL MALLORCA 1
A late goal from Argentine defender Fabricio Fuentes put an end to Villarreal's three-match losing streak and condemned relegation-threatened Mallorca to a costly defeat.
Villarreal fell behind when Mallorca midfielder Guillermo Pereyra headed in from a corner, but Jon Dahl Tomasson levelled 12 minutes later when he steered in from close range after a great run and cut-back from Chile midfielder Matias Fernandez. - - - -

Sociedad's chances of remaining in the top flight look increasingly slim after a sixth defeat in seven games. Striker Angel Arizmendi scored the winner for Depor just before the half hour when he steered in from close range after midfielder Sergio had clipped a free kick into the area. Sociedad threw everything at Depor in the second half but did not have the firepower to breach the visitors' defence. - - - -
ATLETICO MADRID 1 REAL MADRID 1
A dominant Atletico were denied a first win in eight years over their city rivals at the Calderon when Argentine striker Gonzalo Higuain scored his first goal since joining Real from River Plate in January just after the hour. Fernando Torres had put Atletico in front with his first ever goal against Real thanks to a classy strike in the 11th minute but his side had a second controversially ruled out soon afterwards, apparently for offside. Real were kept in the game by goalkeeper Iker Casillas and the visitors managed to hang on for a point despite having centre back Fabio Cannavaro sent off six minutes from time. - - - - -

Own goal sends Juventus back to the top of Serie B
ROME, Feb 26 - Juventus returned to the top of Italy's Serie B when a late own goal by defender Matteo Centurioni gifted them a 1-0 win over Modena on Monday.
Juventus, who have a nine-point penalty from last year's match-fixing scandal, have 46 points from 24 matches, two points ahead of Napoli, who beat Triestina 3-1 on Saturday.
Modena's keeper Giorgio Frezzolini kept his side in the contest with a pair of good saves to keep out shots by Alessandro Del Piero and Pavel Nedved. But he was beaten in the 86th minute, when Centurioni's attempt to cut out a Valeri Bojinov cross flew past him into the corner of the net. -

SEVILLA BEAT BARCA TO GO TOP
Sevilla leapfrogged Barcelona to go top of the Primera Liga on Saturday after a brilliant 2-1 comeback victory in their top-of-the-table clash with the European champions at the Sanchez Pizjuan.
The Andalusians went a goal down and then a man down against the Catalan outfit - Aitor Ocio the player dismissed - but produced a stunning revival to displace the Spanish champions at the summit after 25 matches.
Ronaldinho put Barcelona ahead early on, but goals from Russian striker Aleksander Kerzakhov and Brazilian full-back Daniel Alves gave Sevilla a precious victory which could prove crucial in the title run-in.
Barca finished with just nine men following the second-half dismissals of Ludovic Giuly and Gianluca Zambrotta, the former particularly unfortunate.
Fernando Morientes scored the only goal as Valencia edged past Celta Vigo in a gripping encounter at the Estadio Mestalla on Saturday evening. -

Messi earns Barca dramatic draw
Argentine teenager Lionel Messi scored a last-gasp goal to complete a hat-trick and earn 10-man Barcelona a 3-3 draw at home to Real Madrid. Messi beat two defenders and steered a low shot into the far corner in the final minute of a dramatic game.
Messi and Real Madrid's Ruud van Nistelrooy had each scored twice in a frantic first half-hour. Real's Sergio Ramos looked to have sealed victory 17 minutes from time before Messi had the final say.
Van Nistelrooy had put Real in front in the fifth minute before Messi responded by drilling the ball past Iker Casillas. The Dutchman restored Real's lead from the penalty spot but Messi levelled again when he smashed high into the net on 29 minutes.
Barca suffered a major blow when Oleguer was sent off before the break and Real tried to make the most of their advantage. But despite the header from Ramos, Barca never gave up and Messi's late strike sparked wild celebrations at the Nou Camp. -
Promotion chasing Juventus beaten 3-1 at Brescia
ROME - Juventus's bid to win promotion back to Serie A suffered a setback when they were beaten 3-1 by Brescia on Saturday. Juventus still lead the second division Serie B with 49 points, one point ahead of Napoli, who drew 1-1 with Rimini.
The hero at Brescia was striker Matteo Serafini, who scored a first-half hat-trick to hand the Italian giants only their second league defeat of the season. Serafini opened the scoring in the fourth minute by lobbing Juventus goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon from the edge of the area.
Alessandro Del Piero's ninth-minute equaliser failed to upset Brescia, who regained the lead midway through the half when Serafini volleyed in a Marek Hamsyk cross.
The 28-year-old completed his hat-trick in first-half stoppage time, catching Jonathan Zebina in possession before firing a right-footed shot past Buffon. -

Bilbao remain deep in relegation trouble after this full-blooded northern derby. Midfielder Inaki Munoz put Osasuna ahead from the penalty spot in the 29th minute after Roberto Soldado went down in the area.
Midfielder David Lopez extended the lead with a long-range shot in the 47th and defender Jose Izquierdo scored an outstanding individual effort in the 71st. Bilbao had striker Aritz Aduriz sent off at the end.
REAL MALLORCA 2 REAL BETIS 0
Mallorca stormed into the lead with two almost identical goals in the first three minutes. Ariel Ibagaza's corner from the right was headed home by Argentine midfielder Guillermo Pereyra inside the first minute.
Another Ibagaza corner from the right was headed goalwards and stopped on the line by the keeper, but Venezuelan forward Juan Arango knocked in the rebound.
RECREATIVO HUELVA 0 BARCELONA 4
Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o surprised Recreativo with a long-range shot after three minutes and a swift passing move in the 40th ended with Italian defender Gianluca Zambrotta adding the second.
Silvinho crossed for Eto'o to volley the third two minutes later. Argentine forward Lionel Messi dribbled past three defenders with four minutes left to wrap up Barca's first away win in the league since November.
VALENCIA 0 RACING SANTANDER 2
Valencia had only lost once at home all season but were chasing the game from the 20th minute when Nikola Zigic's knock down was volleyed in by Pedro Munitis.
Munitis provided the corner for defender Oriol to head the second at the near post in the 63rd. -

Depor had striker Angel Arizmendi sent off for elbowing after 35 minutes, but with 10 minutes left defender Antonio Barragan blasted a 25-metre shot past visiting keeper Roberto Abbondanzieri, who should have done better.

Levante scored after 13 minutes when Gustavo Reggi pounced on a poor defensive header back to the keeper, but they only held the lead for six minutes before Albert Riera squared for Espanyol striker Luis Garcia to level.

Gimnastic had defender Cesar Navas sent off after six minutes for fouling Ruud van Nistelrooy on the edge of the area, but held their own until Brazilian substitute Robinho put away the Dutchman's miscued shot in the 56th minute. Real squandered a host of chances against the league's leakiest defence before Raul's nearpost header was deflected into his own net by Nastic midfielder David Garcia in the 81st minute.

Zaragoza's Argentine striker Diego Milito chased a long punt to break clear and score in the 20th minute for his 18th goal of the season. Atletico had their chances but slipped to their fourth consecutive away defeat against a direct rival for the European places.
SEVILLA 2 CELTA VIGO 0
Sevilla broke the deadlock in the 52nd minute when Celta's Gustavo Lopez handled in the area for a penalty. Mali striker Frederic Kanoute converted from the spot for his 19th of the season. Celta lost Uruguayan midfielder Fabian Canobbio to a red card for a wild challenge in the 74th, and Sevilla's Russian striker Alexander Kerzhakov scored on the break in the last minute.

Sociedad were chasing their first away win of the season and took the lead when Brazilian forward Savio scored from a flicked-on long throw in the 40th minute. Villarreal levelled through midfielder Josico with a header from a corner in the 59th and had midfielder Cani sent off 11 minutes from time. -

Barcelona struggled to break down Deportivo until the 45th minute when a fine piece of skill from Brazilian Ronaldinho set up Argentine Lionel Messi for the opening goal. Ronaldinho's driving run off the left flank in the 51st ended with the ball falling to Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o to add the second.
Sloppy defending allowed Adrian Lopez to nip through to score for Depor in the 69th.
REAL BETIS 3 VILLARREAL 3
Betis, playing the first game of their three-match stadium ban at Seville's La Cartuja, fell behind after one minute when Uruguay striker Diego Forlan broke free on to a long punt.The hosts levelled with a header from striker Fernando before Forlan struck again in the 47th, firing in following a corner. Brazilian Edu headed Betis level again from a freekick only for French midfielder Robert Pires to restore Villarreal's lead in the 78th. Betis defender Juanito levelled in stoppage time when he bundled the ball in from a corner.

Sociedad kept alive their chances of avoiding relegation when defender Ion Ansotegi headed in Savio's 38th-minute freekick. Levante had striker Riga sent off in the 53rd and had a goal disallowed towards the end for handball.

David Villa acrobatically volleyed Valencia ahead from Joaquin's cross in the 12th minute but Espanyol levelled when Ivan de la Pena's pass set up Albert Riera. Villa set up goals for Vicente and Miguel Angel Angulo before Luis Garcia pulled one back for the visitors in the 63rd.

A fully deserved victory for Zaragoza who had Barca on the back foot from the start following Frank Rijkaard's decision to field a three-man defence. Zaragoza had a host of scoring chances before they finally broke the deadlock 13 minutes after the break, Diego Milito claiming his 19th goal of the season after fellow Argentine Andres D'Alessandro threaded an acute-angled shot in from the bye-line. Barca have won just one of their last nine away games and this latest defeat will give their rivals renewed hope of stopping them taking a third successive league title.
ATHLETIC BILBAO 1 VALENCIA 0
Igor Gabilondo boosted Athletic's hopes of avoiding the drop when he earned Athletic their first win in six with a stylish finish just before the half hour although his side were lucky to hang on for the victory. The midfielder clipped an angled back-heel past reserve keeper Ludovic Butelle after good work from Joseba Etxeberria on the right. Valencia clearly had one eye on next week's Champions League quarter-final return against Chelsea as coach Quique Sanchez Flores decided to leave a host of first-choice players on the bench at San Mames. -

RACING DENT MADRID TITLE HOPES
Racing Santander dealt a major blow to nine-man Real Madrid's Spanish title hopes as two second-half penalties earned them a 2-1 win.
Three points would have sent Fabio Capello's side a point clear of Barcelona at the top of the table, but they could now find themselves five points off the pace if the Catalans beat Real Mallorca on Sunday.
Raul had given Madrid the lead just after the half hour, but Ezequiel Garay calmly converted from the spot twice in the last 20 minutes to boost Racing's chance of European qualification.
A demoralised Real ended the night with nine men on the field after Ivan Helguera and Alvaro Mejia were sent off in the closing minutes. -

Real's title hopes suffered a heavy blow after two second-half penalties from Ezequiel Garay earned Racing a controversial comeback win. But the Argentine atoned for his error when he drilled home after Lionel Scaloni appeared to dive in the area. Garay added another penalty in the final minute, the referee pointing to the spot when Fabio Cannavaro laid a hand on Serbian striker Nikola Zigic. Real ended the game with nine men after defenders Ivan Helguera and Alvaro Mejia were dismissed in the dying minutes for heavy challenges on Racing forward Pedro Munitis.

Relegation-threatened Sociedad earned their first away win of the season when midfielder Javier Garrido cracked in a 25-metre free kick in the 32nd minute. Betis played the game at La Cartuja because of their stadium ban. -

Athletic had Ismael Urzaiz to thank for a comeback win that kept them clear of the drop zone, the burly striker scoring two trademark headers from free kicks during the second half. The Basque side could hardly have got off to a worse start, falling behind with three minutes on the clock when Espanyol midfielder Jonatas caught keeper Daniel Aranzubia off guard by letting fly from a metre inside the opposition half.

Leading striker Fernando Torres scored his 10th goal of the season with a fine second-half curler to earn Atletico a win that reignited their hopes of a Champions League place. It was a costly defeat for Levante who dropped into the relegation zone after their immediate rivals won.

A last-gasp own goal from their former player Fernando Navarro earned a sluggish-looking Barcelona a win that helped them stretch their lead at the top. Mallorca had a great chance to take the lead on 31 minutes when they were awarded a penalty when midfielder Jonas Gutierrez was felled by keeper Victor Valdes. But the Argentine fluffed his spot kick and Barca came away with the points when Navarro turned the ball into his own net after a Javier Saviola shot had rebounded off the post.
CELTA VIGO 1 DEPORTIVO CORUNA 0
Former Bulgaria coach Hristo Stoichkov got off to a winning start as manager of Celta who claimed their first victory in seven outings and only their second at Balaidos this season. Brazilian striker Fernando Baiano ended a barren run in front of goal when he diverted a shot into the net after 61 minutes.
GETAFE 3 VILLARREAL 0
Getafe gained their first win in eight outings with a stylish victory over out-of-sorts Villarreal who welcomed back central defender Gonzalo Rodriguez after nine months injured. Francisco Casquero put Bernd Schuster's side ahead just after the half hour when he smashed an unstoppable shot high into the net from just outside the area. Daniel Guiza missed a penalty seven minutes later but fellow striker Maris Verpakovskis did make it 2-0 midway through the second half. Substitute Sergio Pachon completed the rout.
GIMNASTIC 1 REAL ZARAGOZA 0
Former Real Madrid striker Javier Portillo earned basement side Gimnastic a thoroughly deserved win over high-flying Zaragoza with a fine diving header eight minutes from time. Zaragoza were a shadow of the side that beat Barcelona 1-0 last weekend and were outplayed for much of the game.
OSASUNA 1 RECREATIVO HUELVA 1
Former Liverpool striker Florent Sinama-Pongolle put Recre in front with his 11th goal this season, finishing a superbly crafted passing move early in the second half. But UEFA Cup semi-finalists Osasuna hit back almost immediately with defender Cesar Cruchaga outjumping the defence to head home at the far post from a free kick.

Valencia bounced back from their Champions League exit at the hands of Chelsea with a win that put them back in the top four and dented Sevilla's title ambitions. David Villa put the home side in front midway through the first half, but keeper Santiago Canizares produced a superb save to preserve his side's lead when he turned an Enzo Maresca penalty on to the post. Villa made sure of the win when he netted from the spot early in the second half after he went down under a challenge from Sevilla defender Andreas Hinkel who was sent off. -

Villarreal blew the Liga title race wide open once again as they shocked Barcelona 2-0 at El Madrigal. A goalless first half was mainly due to poor finishing, with the champions guilty of some bad misses.
But The Yellow Submarines were bolstered in the second period and they grabbed the lead with a superbly worked goal as Robert Pires bagged a goal on his full debut.
