SINGAPORE SQUEEZE THROUGH TO THE FINAL ON PENALTIESSINGAPORE (Jan 27, 2007) - Singapore are through to the final of the Asean Football Championship for the
second consecutive time. And they did it the hard way. They triumphed in the penalty shoot-out and 55,000 fans at the National Stadium on Saturday night heaved a huge sigh of relief.
More so after the second leg semi-final clash had ended in a 1-1 draw and extra time failed to produce an outright winner with the opening leg at the Shah Alam stadium on Tuesday had also ended in a similar score. And the saddest man at the stadium must surely be Malaysia's Mohd Khyril Muhymeen whose failed penalty kick in the shootout saw his team bowing out of the competition.
The sell-out crowd in the traditional red of Singapore erupted into joy as goalkeeper Lionel Lewis dived the right way to prevent Mohd Khyril and taking the match into further agony. It ended five to four in the mandatory shootout and Singapore now have the chance to repeat their triumph of 2004 where they beat Indonesia in the final.
Indeed there was the silver lining for Singapore as the match got underway under the dark threatening clouds hovering above. Yet the weather held but Singapore with the crowd solidly behind them was slow to find their tempo and for long periods in the opening quarter, they just could not find the fluency in attack and Malaysia were contented to sit back and absorb whatever their opponents could hurl at them.
Only the three yellow cards - two for Malaysia and one Singapore - provided the talking point in the terraces as they sat and wait for the opening goal to lift their spirits. And it almost came in the 29th min when Singapore's fullback Muhammad Ridhuan Muhammad stole the ball from Fuazi Nan deep in the Malaysian 18-yard box and played it forward for Indra Shahdan Daud but the shot from the Singapore striker was a little too weak to cause any real problem for Mohammad Syamsuri in the Malaysian goal.
Malaysia survived but when Singapore just could not inflict more damage, they grew in confidence and in the 36th min they thought they found the breakthrough. Hairuddin Omar broke free down the middle in the 36th min. Singapore's Baihakki Khaizan playing in place of the suspended skipper Aide Iskandar Sahak was there to challenge and the ball fell loose only for Shukor Adnan to blast it over the bar from 18 yards.
Malaysia kept chipping away and in the 57th min they struck. Eddy Helmi Manan chested down a clearance off a freekick and from 25 yards out, his shot, struck low and hard, slipped through the grasp of Lionel and Malaysia were one goal up.
The response from Singapore was also swift and in the 74th min, fullback Daniel Bennett's looping cross into the Malaysia penalty box was met with a nod down from Nor Alam Shah and Muhd Ridhuan Muhammad was there to tap the ball in for the equaliser.
The battle continue but extra time failed to produce a goal and then came the heartbreaker for Malaysia.
