WEST HAM are desperately trying to get in touch with Birmingham owner David Sullivan to make an improved offer for Matthew Upson.The Hammers have had bids of £5million and £7million turned down for the defender. But they are so keen to lure Upson (right) before the transfer window closes at midnight on Wednesday they are poised to table an £8m offer to Sullivan.
So far managing director Karren Brady backs boss Steve Bruce in keeping Upson,27. But Hammers chairman Eggert Magnusson has decided to change tack and deal direct with Sullivan, on holiday in Barbados.
Magnusson is hoping he can talk Sullivan, a former West Ham shareholder, around even though Bruce claims even £10m would not be enough for Upson. The St Andrew's chief added: "There is no price on Matty." Upson can expect a £70,000-a-week package from West Ham.� Jose made John club captain and has led the club to back-to-back Premiership titles.
"John thinks he's the best there is but if Mourinho goes there's no way John would follow." The news will come as something of a shock and embarrassment to Mourinho, who claimed that Terry would only sign if he was staying in control.
