AIDE ISKANDAR: THE HAPPY LION
SINGAPORE – The happiest man in the Singapore squad right now must be skipper Aide Iskandar Sahak. Simply because he now has the chance to lead his team into the two-leg final of the Asean Football Championship against Thailand after serving a one-match suspension for having collected two yellow cards.
He missed the decisive leg of the semi-final clash against Malaysia and the Singapore back four missed his leadership and his guidance too. But the 30-year old Aide is available again as Singapore prepare to face the three-time champion in the first leg final at the National stadium this evening with the return leg in Bangkok.
The Thais are the overwhelming favourite to lift the title for the fourth time but Aide begs to differ. "The old saying that anything can happen in the final, is especially true. We have come a long way and we would not throw in the towel without a fight. Sure the Thais are the favourite but we have two legs to overcome the odds," said Aide who now plays for Geylang United in the local S-League after having spent one season in the Malaysian league with Johor.
He is still going strong , just like good wine which matures with age. And a possible seventh Asean Football Championship appearance?
"Let wait for the sixth one to be over first. Keep the Cup in Singapore and then I will give a serious thought."
