Sam Allardyce has admitted he is being 'selfish' in hoping that Bolton captain Kevin Nolan fails to make Steve McClaren's England squad.
The Trotters captain has been tipped for his first international call-up when McClaren names his selection for a friendly encounter against Spain next week.
The squad is named on Friday, but Allardyce - who has previously been vociferous in questioning why Nolan has been ignored thus far - admits he does not want his star midfielder to be included.
Allardyce would rather see his skipper continue his recent goalscoring form and remain fresh for his club rather than suffer the distraction of an England call-up.
"Not at this moment in time. I want to keep him for us," Allardyce told the Bolton News.
"I am being very selfish. Maybe later on, when summer comes.
"He is getting back in the scoring mood and he's getting his game right up there again.
"It would be a great honour for him and for our club if he was called up but I would have to be selfish as a manager and say I hope he stays with us."
Even if Allardyce's wishes are granted and Nolan's own dreams are dashed, the Bolton skipper insists he will continue to try and impress McClaren.
"It would be absolutely fantastic to play for my country," said Nolan.
"It is just one of those things, though, that we are blessed with so many good midfielders.
"I have just got to keep doing the business for Bolton and, hopefully, Steve McClaren will see it and he will give me a chance to join up with the lads and have a closer look at me."

too much competition for midfield places anyway
