Ferguson - Barca facing tough task
Sir Alex Ferguson has claimed Champions League holders Barcelona face a `near impossible' task to overhaul their first-leg deficit against Liverpool at Anfield next week. Rafael Benitez's men stunned Barca in the Nou Camp, taking a 2-1 lead back to Merseyside despite falling behind early in the game.
Barcelona are still confident of getting through to the quarter-finals, yet Ferguson, whose Manchester United side visit Liverpool in the Barclays Premiership on Saturday, knows exactly how tough a task the Catalan giants face.
Liverpool have been virtually impregnable on home soil this term, with only Arsenal able to beat them in both domestic cup competitions. And Ferguson feels Barcelona will find it incredibly difficult to avoid tumbling out of the competition and offering increased hope for the rest of the contenders for Europe's most prestigious club prize.
'If Barcelona win at Liverpool they will be favourites but they face an almost impossible task to win at Anfield,' Ferguson told Gazzetta dello Sport. 'If they are eliminated, all the rest of the teams, like AC Milan, Inter or ourselves, can point to the final.' -

'No chance'
The centre-back suffered a head injury in Sunday's 2-1 victory against Arsenal FC in the English League Cup final and was taken to hospital on a stretcher having been knocked unconscious. He then had precautionary scans this week with doctors advising two weeks' rest. "There is no chance of John playing against Porto," said Chelsea manager José Mourinho after his side's 2-0 Premiership victory at Portsmouth FC on Saturday evening. "The man must come before the player. John is more important than a football result and we don't risk him. The medical rules are the medical rules." Chelsea take on Mourinho's former club Porto at Stamford Bridge on Tuesday night with the first leg having finished 1-1. -

RIJKAARD EXPECTING MIGHTY CLASH
Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard has warned his side that Liverpool will make life as tough for them on Tuesday as Sevilla did at the weekend. Sevilla knocked Barca off top spot in the Primera Liga on Saturday after fighting back from a goal down to claim a 2-1 home win.
That was a blow to the Catalan giants ahead of their crucial Champions League last-16 second leg against Liverpool, where Barca have to overturn a 2-1 deficit, and Rijkaard admits they can expect a similarly testing evening at Anfield.
"I hope it is a lesson we can all learn from going into Tuesday's game as Liverpool will fight like Sevilla," he said. "There's no time to think too much. We know what to expect against Liverpool. It's the best time to face up to the Champions League game."
Barca missed a great chance to establish a five-point lead at the Primera Liga summit in the match against closest challengers Sevilla. Ronaldinho had put the reigning Spanish and European champions 1-0 up early on and the Brazilian then had the chance to make it 2-0 from the penalty spot in the 27th minute. But the former FIFA World Player of the Year saw his spot-kick saved and Sevilla, despite having a player sent off in conceding the penalty, managed to draw level just before the break.
The home side then took a 2-1 lead in the second period when Daniel Alves, reportedly a transfer target for Liverpool last summer, scored from a free-kick. Barca could find no way back after that, and also finished the match with nine men following the dismissals of Ludovic Giuly and Gianluca Zambrotta.
Rijkaard refused to single out any individual for the loss though, insisting the team must share collective responsibility as much when things go right as when they go wrong. "I don't like to blame one player," the Dutchman said.
"The goals conceded are a consequence of errors of the team regarding aggressiveness or not being attentive. We win together and lose together. "The defeat can be a lesson. I'm not going to cry about the defeat, I've already said that it will not decide the Liga," Rijkaard said.
Barca have recalled playmaker Deco and defender Lilian Thuram for Tuesday's game. Both players were rested on Saturday, but have been named in an 18-man travelling party for the trip to England. Santiago Ezquerro, Juliano Belletti, Thiago Motta and Giovanni van Bronckhorst have been omitted.

Rijkaard tries to turn the pressure on Liverpool
Barcelona coach Frank Rijkaard is hoping that the favourites tag will weigh heavily on opponents Liverpool when the two sides meet at Anfield in the return leg of their Champions League last-16 tie on Tuesday.
Defending champions Barcelona lost 2-1 at home two weeks ago and face an uphill task if they are to turn the tie around and make the quarter-finals. 'Everyone, including all their fans, think they are already through and so they will be under a lot more pressure than us,' the Dutchman told daily Sport on Monday.
'We committed some errors in our own stadium and I think we now need to take the pressure off ourselves if we are to play well. We have the necessary quality and talent to pull off a surprise.' 'If we can score early on we will be within a goal of going through. We're optimistic.' -

Liverpool preparing for all-out Barca attack
Liverpool manager Rafa Benitez and skipper Steven Gerrard expect Barcelona to come at them with all guns blazing when the European champions attempt to hold on to their title at Anfield on Tuesday.
Liverpool, Barcelona's predecessors as European champions, beat Frank Rijkaard's side 2-1 in the first leg of their Champions League first knockout round tie at the Nou Camp two weeks ago, and Benitez said he was prepared to face a Barcelona side likely to be playing with an attacking 3-4-3 formation.
He told a huge gathering of reporters at Monday's pre-match news conference: "I cannot influence how they set up, I can only concentrate on our tactics.
"But they need to score at least twice. We know they are an attacking side so it will be nothing new if they come here and attack us. I expect them to play with Ronaldinho, Samuel Eto'o and Lionel Messi up front and we are prepared for that." -
