Claude Makelele's future may be in doubt after reports surfaced that Chelsea may be unwilling to offer him a new long-term deal.
Makelele is under contract until June 2008 and is keen to secure a two-year extension.
Fellow holding midfielder Michael Essien agreed a new five-year deal at Chelsea on Monday, while chief executive Peter Kenyon has revealed he is confident that the club's 'important players' will remain with the club long-term.
Yet while he last month outlined his intention to see out his career at Stamford Bridge, France Football has reported that Chelsea are only willing to offer the 34-year old Makelele a deal until 2009, meaning he may seek a long-term contract elsewhere.
