Barely twenty-four hours after Rafa Benitez was handed a £40m transfer kitty by Liverpool's new foreign owners, Jose Mourinho has indicated that the days of Chelski spending to excess are over by claiming the club couldn't afford to sign Porto defender Pepe.
The barbed comments will further aggravate the disillusioned Roman Abramovich and suggest that the Russian has imposed a spending freeze after an estimated £400m expenditure since buying the club in 2004.
Speaking after Porto's 1-1 draw with Benfica, Mourinho told the Portuguese press: "Pepe impressed me a lot and was very good. Besides, I've been passionate about Pepe for a long time. By that, don't think that Chelsea want Pepe, because they don't have money for him."
It is unlikely in any case that Mourinho will still be at Stamford Bridge this summer, with only Champions League success offering any hope of salvation. According to The Daily Telegraph, 'Despite the intense speculation over Mourinho's future, it is understood that there is unlikely to be an approach to Russia manager Guus Hiddink, who has been linked with the club. Sources close to Chelsea say he will not replace Mourinho because he has a contract with Russia until the end of the Euro 2008 finals.
'But it does seem increasingly likely that [Portsmouth's Israeli coach] Avram Grant will join the club's coaching team in the summer. According to insiders, Mourinho has now even agreed to the move, fearing that his refusal could hasten his departure.' -

if he is good enough he should be able to manage without further funds. after all this squad has plenty of players he can offload for money.

I don't understand what crap he's talking about - Chelsea no money? What is used to buy all these players during the past 2 - 3 years ? Oil?
the money has been spent & in the form of players - he cannot expect a club to stump him 30, 40 mil per annum - not unless Chelsea is earning obscene revenue like Microsoft. Abramovich invest in the club not donate to the club - at some stage, the game's going to end and the trapdoor going to open.
He is a stupid moaner who keeps whining, instead of putting his hand up to admit he bought the wrong players or have the wrong mix of players. Think he better go lah, go to another club & build from there with less "control".
Seriously, if I plough my millions in a club, I also want to buy my favorite players whether my manager likes it or not. Mourinho's job is to manage these "assets" to achieve results, and he's paid good money for it. If he cannot, we find someone who can. Its that simple. So, Mourinho, stop whining.... -
He seem to be asking for too much these days... While every other top clubs are spending about $20m on average per season, he has spent about $70m on average over the last 3 seasons and its still not enough for him...
After checking, just realized that he spent more money in one season alone than most of the others spent in their last 3 seasons... You can also say he spent more than the total transfer fee amount of the other 3 from the "Big 4" combine for this season. What case does he have to make such a complain?
I believed no other club can give him this kind of transfer budgets... I think even Real Madrid can't give him this kind of money to spend yearly...

John Terry is a good central defender and having him around would be a great boost, but to not even have a half decent central defender to take over in times of injury or suspension is rather weird. Especially in a long season where Chelsea is claiming they can do a quadraple. -
But quite honestly, the buying of Ballack and Shevchenko might not really have been his choice. Besides, it was quite obvious Chelsea needed cover for central defenders, the very least they could do was to have enough cover to tide over when Chelsea were critically hit in the defense department. -

If u are AB, u look at other clubs spending so little and yet can be leading the table, eg, Man Utd..

Anyway, who won't want him i ask you? He was after all the European player of the year not too long ago only, scored many goals for AC Milan... It is probably their system rather than the player himself that could be at fault.
Man u got a 35 yrs old Larsson who never got as far as Shev as a player but he still played very well with the team... Its probably how the coach fit him into his team... Shev first match for them against Liverpool was great, he scored a good striker's goal and everyone was saying Chelsea was unstoppable this season...
I think its not just coincidence that England strikers also have this problem of not scoring goals... It could be that someone playing in their central midfield perfers to shoot most of the time rather than creating for the front man... Shev is more of a predictory kind of striker that depends on supply and seldom create his own... Over at AC, he had Kaka probably one of the best in present time to provide him that service... Over at chelsea... well, i guess they are a little bit more selfish with the supplies. -

I see your point, they did need a striker at end of last season they only had Drogba as a top notch striker so if they were going to buy, why not buy the best. Larsson was a player Ferguson had admired and appreciated for a long time already before that. Afterall, Ferguson had previously tried to lure him away from Celtic. People seem to forget that Roman Abramovich is also just only a man. Chelsea football club came to prominence only because of him... Begin with, Chelsea was not a proper organization before him. He took interest in the club willingly spent lots of his money to see them do well. He also spend alot of time watching almost every match in their first 3 yrs...
But it has been 4 yrs since he came to chelsea, the interest in him probably not as "hot" as when he first came in... At that time, he probably treated it like his "New Girlfriend", spending a lot of money and time on her wasn't a problem because he was excited to be with her... But now that the new feeling is gone, he just want to make sure that "She" survive and doing ok but don't over spend his money...
Its probably true and to a certain extend that people will take things for granted after time... I am thinking that the "New feeling" is not there anymore, and she may not excite him as much as before.
He may still be willing to pay for her maintenance but not buy her diamonds and pearls anymore... I am referring to chelsea and not his ex-wife, don't get the wrong idea. -
Well they did, all $80m pounds of it. He brought in Boulahrouz and A Cole... Boulahrouz did well for Holland at the WC and could also double up as a right-back if needed. The problem is, he has been really lucky in his first 2 years where they had very little injury to most of their players while others had these problems. That probably prompt him to sell players like Robert Huth (a German international) cos he weren't getting much play time and Asier Del Horno and Gallas as well.
Another possiblity is also, with so many extra high salary players added to the team, i think they may have actually cut down the numbers of players to their team in order not to over spend on salaries... Afterall, he has been enjoying injury free for the last 2 yrs and didn't expect to experience a what if situation... -
