United rout plucky Hornets
Manchester United booked a date at the new Wembley with a 4-1 win over Watford in the FA Cup semi-final at Villa Park.
Sir Alex Ferguson has never lost at this stage during his Old Trafford tenure and that record remains intact after Wayne Rooney's brace helped to see off a spirited Watford effort.
Rooney's thunderbolt put United ahead early on before Hameur Bouazza's eyecatching finish drew The Hornets level, only for Cristiano Ronaldo to celebrate signing his new contract by quickly restoring his side's lead.
A second goal from Rooney after the break finished off the Watford fight and substitute Kieran Richardson added a fourth to give the scoreline a lopsided look.
United gained the upper hand on seven minutes via the first chance of the game. Michael Carrick's pass was left by both Ryan Giggs and Alan Smith to fortuitously roll into Rooney's path, who cut inside and thumped his drive beyond Richard Lee.
Ronaldo headed a Giggs corner over and Alan Smith was wildly off target from Rooney's clever knock-down as United dominated the early exchanges.
But Watford steadily came into the contest, with set-pieces proving to be their source of opportunities.
A flailing boot from Clarke Carlisle accidentally caught Edwin van der Sar in the face and Watford subsequently took advantage from the break in play to equalise on 26 minutes.
United failed to clear a long throw-in, Tommy Smith hooked the ball across goal and Bouazza's acrobatic attempt flew past Van der Sar via a deflection off Gabriel Heinze.
The Premiership leaders' response was immediate as Alan Smith released Rooney down the right, Lee was unable to cut out his square pass and Ronaldo bundled the ball home at the near post.
Gavin Mahon, who scored a stunning goal against Portsmouth on Monday, let fly from distance again, with his deflected drive forcing Van der Sar to parry the ball clear.
Jay DeMerit produced a fine last-ditch tackle to stop Ronaldo surging through for a second goal before United were pressed into a reshuffle.
Rio Ferdinand picked up a groin injury, prompting Darren Fletcher to come on at right-back, with Patrice Evra heading over to the left and Heinze shifting inside.
United could have scored again before the close of the half as Lee - filling in for the ineligible Ben Foster - thrust out a hand to stop Rooney's stinging shot after a clever one-two with Giggs.
Fletcher was left unmarked from a corner, only to see his header drift wide, while Rooney's impudent chip was awry.
Watford started the second half brightly and Bouazza had a chance to draw his side level again, but he steered his shot wide after United struggled with another long throw.
Evra stopped Bouazza in his tracks with a fine tackle before slack defending from Watford gifted their opponents a third goal on 66 minutes.
Alan Smith collected the ball on the edge of the area and was given time to pick out Rooney in the six-yard box for the England striker's second of the game.
Rooney scented a hat-trick and shot straight at Lee after being teed up by Smith, who was unable to fashion a shooting chance for himself.
A jinking run from Giggs resulted in Lee saving well with his legs before Watford fans were in full voice to cheer the introduction of Marlon King for his first appearance in six months.
Ronaldo was given a breather for the final 10 minutes and his replacement Richardson was quick to make an impact as he lifted the ball over Lee after an incisive pass from Alan Smith.
Tommy Smith's intervention denied Rooney his hat-trick in injury-time, but a fifth goal would have been extremely harsh on a Watford side who gave United some jittery moments, only to lack the class and cutting edge of their opponents, who remain on course for the Treble. -

CARVALHO FEARS 'DEVIL'
RICARDO CARVALHO last night warned his Chelsea team-mates they must beware the "devil" in tomorrow's FA Cup semi-final at Old Trafford. Defender Carvalho fears his former European Cup winning Porto team-mate Benni McCarthy has the ability to cause an FA Cup upset for Blackburn.
Carvalho insists Blackburn will be no pushovers and expects one of the hardest games of the season. "I know Benni very well. He is a devil in the penalty area - very dangerous for defenders," said Carvalho.
"I am convinced he will cause us many problems on Sunday. "Blackburn are not all about McCarthy. They are a compact team. But for a defender like me, stopping McCarthy will be the key to victory. "Cup semi-finals are often close matches. The chances are 50/50 and we must concentrate from the first minute. Blackburn are a hard team and in the Cup they have played at a high level. The match will not be easy for us.
"I have had a wonderful week in the Champions League but reaching the FA Cup final would make it perfect for me. "I am always optimistic. Our dream is to win every trophy and we want to keep that alive. "Against Valencia we showed we are ready for success, that we have the self-belief." -
