Jose Mourinho refused to give up on his side's title chances, but conceded their grip on the championship was hanging by a thread.
The Blues fell five points behind Manchester United after being held to a 2-2 draw at home to Bolton, while Manchester United came from behind to beat Everton 4-2.
With just three games remaining United are odds on favourites to take the title from Chelsea after two successive success for Mourinho's men.
"I feel sad but I have a big game on Tuesday night and that's a good thing in this situation," said Mourinho. "We have no time to be sad.
"But it is almost lost, almost. In football, almost is always a big question mark.
"It is not over because mathematically there is a chance and when the chance is there, we have to believe and chase the opportunity you have.
"At this moment we have to win and we have to wait. It is much more difficult.
"Manchester United, in this moment, feel very, very close. They have to lose two games and we have to win all three.
"They don't feel pressure and feel quite confident. They can come to Stamford Bridge, lose and still be champions.
"They are very, very close to it. But we win things as a team and we lose as a team.
"We do it together in both the good and bad moments." -
