JOSE MOURINHO has hijacked Newcastle’s bid to sign Reading midfielder Steve Sidwell. And the Chelsea boss is convinced he has got his man by offering him £50,000 a week. Sidwell, 24, will be out of contract in a few weeks and available on a free transfer. Newcastle were favourites to sign the ex-Arsenal trainee for months but Chelsea have stepped in and topped the Toon’s £40,000-a-week offer.
The move for playmaker Sidwell also reopens the uncertainty around midfield ace Frank LampardÂ’s future at Stamford Bridge. Lampard, 28, has still not signed a new contract at Chelsea with Spanish giants Barcelona keen on the England star.
Mourinho has already put the wheels in motion to start rebuilding his team after losing his grip on the Premiership title and yet another season of disappointment in the Champions League.
Sidwell has been a key figure helping Reading consolidate in their first Premiership season and it has not gone unnoticed at Stamford Bridge. Mourinho has always insisted on having an English spine to his team. Sidwell was born on Chelsea’s doorstep in Wandsworth — and would be a ready replacement for Lampard.
Reading have offered Sidwell £25,000 a week to sign a new deal — but the ambitious player is holding out in a bid to secure a big-money move. -

Is Sidwell going to become another Parker or SWP?
At least Parker found his calling in the north-east with NUFC. SWP is still rotting away @ the Bridge. -

attacking or defending striker? My understanding is that he is more like Scholes, popping into the box to score goals. -
if true, it represents a slight change of tactic by chelski. instead of signing someone already established & along with their bundles of ego, they go for not-so well known players in hope that with money being catalyst, they can fulfill their potential at Stamford Bridge.
Sidwell will be a good buy but unless Ballack or Lampard is sold, i dun see him figuring that much as starting lineup. Otherwise, he will just warm the bench alongside Geremi or SWP.
it thus boil down to Sidwell himself, whether he wants to remain an annonymous millionaire player or active player.
Arsenal will be a better choice for him as he can look to establish himelf since gilberto is leaving. He can rule the midfield alongside Febregas. -
Sidwell to sign for the Blues
STEVE SIDWELL has kicked his last ball for Reading after sealing a move to Chelsea. The ex-Arsenal midfielder, 25, is set for a medical on Monday to confirm a £50,000-a- week deal with Jose Mourinho’s Blues.
Sidwell agreed a Bosman free transfer to Chelsea just a few days ago after snubbing Newcastle. Royals boss Steve Coppell will leave out Sidwell for tomorrowÂ’s trip to Blackburn.
Coppell said: “I don’t think he’ll be in the squad. "Realistically he’s going. It’s a great opportunity for him and he’ll push on.” -
