Martin O'Neill is keen to tie Czech midfielder Patrik Berger to a new contract as soon as possible.
The Aston Villa manager has been impressed with Berger's performances since the turn of the year and has made a new deal for the 33-year-old one of his top priorities.
Berger looked to be on his way out of Villa Park before Christmas after refusing to play in a reserve game, but he has since established himself in the first team.
"Patrick has been very influential over the last six months," O'Neill told The Sun.
"We had a bit of an argument as to who was going to be the manager of the team but we decided that I'd stick to picking the players and he'd stick to playing.
"His ability and talent is not in question and I definitely want to sit down and sign him."
Berger was sent out on loan to Stoke after falling out with O'Neill, but has since made 12 Premiership appearances, scoring twice.
